STATE POOR AID BILL DRAFTED BY WEISS, EGAN Representative From Heavily Populated Districts to Present Measure. Indiana may do something substantial in caring for its unemployed if a bill being prepared today receives favorable action when presented in the house Wednesday. Sponsors of the measure are Jacob Weiss (Dem.i, Indianapolis, and Fred A. Egan <Dem.), Gary, represetnatives from Marion and Lake counties, respectively, where unemployment is most pressing. According to Weiss, the bill will provide for supplemental aid to the present poor relief provisions, the funds to be derived through a special state tax. Creates County Board It creates a county board for relief of the indigent and unemployed to be made up of the county clerk, a county judge and president of the county council. They will be empowered to provide a weekly payment, not to exceed $lO, to families of unemployed. The revenue raising provision calls for a 10-cent tax on all notarized documents. Weiss estimates that this will bring in $90,000 on licenses in the office of secretary of state. It will raise $500,000 in Marion county and $225,000 in Lake he estimates. "Call It Anything" Answering the charge that this means a "dole,’’ Weiss declared: “What if it is called a dole. Call it anything you like. The state must help feed these people who are in want through no fault of their own. We can not let them starve.” "Take your pay cut and keep your mouth shut," is the tenor of a bil lintroduced in the senate by Senator Lee J. Hartzell (Rep), Ft. Wayne, president pro tern, and Republican floor leader. The bill provides that any state employe who protests a salary reduction may be removed upon petition of twenty taxpayers. DROPS FIGHT ON COP Negro Politiral Worker Withdraws Charges Against Officer. Charges filed with the safety board last week against patrolman Thomas G. Smith, claiming false arrest and conduct unbecoming an officer, were withdrawn today by the plaintiff, Samuel W. Bell, Negro, 1451 Kappes street. No reason was given for the withdrawal, although it had been hinted that the complaint was brewing a controversy between the police department and county officials. Beal is said to be a political worker for Timothy Sexton, county treasurer. Beal was arrested after he attempted to enter the treasurer's office at the courthouse after closing hours. According to the complaint, Beal was warned away from the door twice by Smith, and was arrested on the third attempt. HITS LESLIE SPENDING Mt. Vernon Senator Says Message Printed Extravagantly. Senator Jesse E. Wade (Dem.Y, Mt. Vernon, took a rap at the fancy printing of the message of Governor Harry G. Leslie which was placed on the desks of members of both houses today. The message, which Wade charged was short enough to print nicei> on three sheets of paper, occupies about thirty pages of fine folio paper in a pamphlet containing the names of all state officials, officers of the legislature and members. "Take this thing home and let the farmer taxpayers see where their money goes,’’ Wade shouted. "I here and now' declare that something should be done to stop this robbery." BOOZE SEIVED IN RAID Complete ‘ Importing" Equipment Is Uncovered by Police. Complete equipment for "importting" many well-known brands of whisky, gin and other liquors were found today by Sergeant Wayne Bear and squad at 411 East Tenth street, in a raid on the apartment of Herman Gilcrest, who was charged with blind tiger. Large quantities of labels, caps, and bottles were found in a vacant apartment across the hall from the rooms occupied by Gilcrest, in addition to two gallons of whisky, onehalf gallon of alcohol, and 157 quarts of home brew, police said.
