NUDIST VOGUE EVEN SPREADS TO CITY PRISON Women Can Keep as Cool as They Can While in ‘Cooler/ BY ARCH STEINEL Indianapolis has a police-regu-lated nudist colonyWhen they Join up they must foreswear cigarets, cosmetics, and haircombs for twenty-four hours, but if they want to foreswear clothing that’s their businessBut this colony differs from those of the nudists in New York state and Germany in that it is for women only, and is protected from prying eyes by bars and policewomen. The colony is located in the women’s quarters at the city prison. When a modem Eve gets "pinched” she has rights in the city jail these hot days that she couldn’t get on a city bathing beach. In “Nifties” or Nothing She may live the twenty-four hours of incarceration in the bakeoven jail in "nifties” or nothing. Sure she’s barred from smoking cigarets and her cosmetics can be obtained only through special request, but as for her hours of waiting for her moment in court they’re hers to be as cool in the “cooler” as possible. “Sometimes,” explains Mrs. Mary Oantlon, polic* matron, “we’re compelled to go inside and warn some of them they’ve got visitors to see them.” “When it’s 90 on the street it’s close to 100 inside their quarters what with the sun beating in from either the east or west side. You can’t blame them.” Not at County Jail Women quartered there are held but twenty-four hours while at the county jail they may be serving a sentence or awaiting trial. But at the county jail they must quit their back-to-nature movement. “The least possible dress on a hot day,” says a county jail matron,” is a thin dress.” But the thermometers in the county jail register 10 degrees below street heat. In the city jail the women can have their “cokes” and other special brands of soft drinks, but in the county holdover, milk and coffee are the only beverages. Cigarets Are Barred Cigarets are barred in both domiciles for the erring damsels. “If they were permitted rouge, they’d paint up like dervishes,” explains a county jail matron of the order against cosmetics and perfume. “Pace powder we let them have,” she amended. Where electric fans in corridors cool off the county jail cell blocks, the inmates of the city prison have recourse to folded newspapers. And the moral, if there be a moral, is expressed by one miss who knows her patrol wagon drivers with, “It’s a tough life with your woolens on.” BOYS TO GIVE OPERETTA Camp Crosley Cast to Present Annual Play July 16.
