DEFENDS STATE LAYOFFORDER License Head Says Now Is Slack Season. In defending the order requiring 100 employes of the state automobile and drivers' license departments to take two weeks’ layoff without pay, James W. Carpenter, license commissioner, today said the next three months represent the slack season of the department. Explanation of why Carpenter, E. C. Huber, chief auditor of the department, and other executives would not take the enforced vacations was given that “somebody has got to stay and run the department.” The office of license commissioner is one of the highest paying of statehouse jobs. In addition employes will receive regular vacations with pay. Carpenter said. Layoffs must be taken before November 30. Although Carpenter said the enforced vacations will save between sfi,ooo and $7,00 in salaries, he denied the move was necessitated by the department budget being “out of balance.” Announcement was made in the department Thursday that a decision had been reached not to require reissuance of drivers’ licenses for the coming year. Injured in Gasoline Hlast Horace Kernodle, 35, of 538 South Alabama street, was burned on face, arms and chest Thursday in an explosion of gasoline which occurred when he was emptying the fuel of his truck in front of 551 South llllnois street.
