BILLION-HOLLAR LIFE INSURANCE GUARDSJNDIANA Chief of Underwriters Here Lauds Economic Value of Policies. J. L. NEWMAN That the economic value of life Insurance has never been so great *s in these days was outlined today by E. A. Crane, general agent of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Occidental building, who is president of the Indianapolis Life Underwriters’ Association. “According to the latest annual report of John C. Kidd, state insurance commissioner of Indiana,” he said, “life insurance in force in this state totaled more than $1,100,000,000 on residents of this state. The various companies paid death losses amounting to more than $10,000,000 during the latest fiscal year. There was loaned an enormous sum on policies; great sums were distributed too in the form of dividends.” Life insurance companies operating in Indiana paid more than $1,300,000 in fees and taxes to the commonwealth. “Life insurance has demonstrated inherent stability,” Mr. Crane concluded, "due largely to expertness in management, the principles of diversification of investment and the general principles of the science of life insurance.” So far this year the total amount of new life insurance written in the United States shows only a alight decrease compared with that of the similar period last year. It was estimated that $25,000,000 of new life insurance was written all over the United States in May of this year. Life insurance in force at the end of 1932 will be larger than ever, it was predicted. The number of policyholders, increasing each year, embraces about 54 per cent of the entire population of the United States, that is, about 68,000,000 persons. They own more than $109,000,000,000 worth of protection In the form of policies. Assets of life insurance companies also show an appreciable gain. Heads New Monarch Here Cliff Coleman, formerly manager of the Los Angeles offices of the Monarch Life Insurance Company, is now state manager for Indiana; offices are in the Roosevelt building. The Monarch Life absorbed recently the Monarch Accident Insurance Company. General offices of both concerns were in Springfield, Mass., where the main offices of the resultant concern now are. The combined assets of the two companies, as published recently, are $2,564,773.
