65 RECRUITS TO BONUS BRI6ADE STRANDED HERE Trip to Washington Halted When Trainmen Refuse Them Help. Sixty-five bonus army recruits are stranded today at Emerson avenue and Prospect street, their trip to Washington halted by inability to obtain transportation. There was no breakfast for the men this morning, and they are awaiting results of efforts by their commander, Robert George, Terre Haute, to obtain help. The men are from Decatur and Danville, 111., and Terre Haute. They arrived Wednesday night on a Big Four freight train, but the trip was halted when railroad police refused to permit them to board east-bound freight trains. George came to police headquarters seeking aid. Capt. Otto Pettit told him police can do nothing. “We have breakfast waiting for us in Columbus and Cincinnati, so it won’t make any difference which route we taken out of here,” George said. Pettit did not respond to the hint that breakfast here would be in order, and George left to seek help elsewhere. Train Tickets Due It n L'nitcd I’rruH WASHINGTON, July 7.—Bonus army veterans continued to ask for meal tickets today, while the government prepared to give them train tickets. The house was expected to adopt a senate resolution providing SIOO,000 for train fare, and thus putting up to the army’s 15,000 men the choice of returning whence they came or prolonging their siege of a congress that ignored their bonus demands. President Hoover recommended the appropriation in a letter to Speaker John N. Garner and the resolution was reported favorably by the house ways and means committee. The money would be a loan charged against the adjusted service certificates, on which the veterans want immediate and full payment. Walter W. Waters, commander-in-chief of the army, discouraged acceptance of the proposition, and declared his belief that few veterans would leave. “The majority of these men have no homes,” Waters said. “So what would they want to go home for? There is bitterness in their hearts, and if they return they will spread bitterness, and breed it in others. We are here, and we ought to stay until we get the bonus. But we’ve got to eat.” Waters took anew lease on his leadership by flying to New York, securing food and $1,700 cash, and returning just in time to disorganize opposition to him. The $1,700 will buy two days’ food for the army. He also “humanized’’ his generalship by introducing his wife to the men and quartering her in his none-too-comfortable tent on the Anacostia flats. She arrived from Oregon by bus. Mrs. Waters, mother of two daughter, age 2 and 5, is slim, fair skinned and blond. “I am accused of being a dictator,” Waters said. “Well, here is my dictator, my wife.” ASSISTANT PASTOR OF SACRED HEART IS DEAD Monastery Superior Succumbs After Operation at Hospital. The Rev. Humilis Zwiesler, assistant pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic church and superior of the i Sacred Heart monastery, died J Wednesday following an operation in the St. Francis hospital in Beech Grove. Father Zwiesler was born in Dayton, 0., in 1890, and was educated in the Catholic schools there, and in St. Joseph’s college in Teutopolis, 111. He was ordained into the priesthood fourteen years ago, and had been at the local church seven years. Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart church at 9:30 Saturday. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s cemetery. MAYORPUTS OUT BLAZE Aided by Domestic, Sullivan Quells Fire at Rear of Home. Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan, by virtue of his office as commander of the fire and police departments, was part of a bucket brigade of two which extinguished a fire in the alley back of his home today, the other being a domestic employed by the mayor. Trash in a basket in an alley back of the home at 503 North Capitol avenue became ignited. Firemen were called, but on arrival found that their commander-in-chief and his aid had done their work well.

Steps toward beautification of Fall creek in the northwest part of the city will be taken by the Montcalm Civic League, it was decided Wednesday night. The league also expressed opposition to dumping trash on the creek banks near city hospital. the best type of action on necessary legislation for tax relief, equalization of the burden, and unemployment and business aid. Proportionately, the Democratic members of the house suffered more than the other party or the senate colleagues. In the 1931 session, the Democrats had 75 of the 100 members of the house of representatives. Since that tfme one member, Russell J. Dean. Indianapolis, has resigned; and two have died. Lew S. Core of Elnora and Erasmus T. Sage of Jeffersonville, all Democrats. Thii cut the number of that party to seventy-two. Sixteen were defeated for renomination and twenty-five were not candidates in the May primary. But six of that latter group sought senatorial nominations, and part were victorious. M M M The house Republicans started with twenty-five and one was not a candidate, while eight were defeated for renomination, leaving only sixteen remaining who again are candidates. Out of ninety-seven members of the house, the total number taking an active interest in the work of the special session because of the bearing it will have upon their own political fortunes in the November election is only forty-seven. The same condition prevails apparently in the senate, where the Republican majority has sustained the severest drain. Os this group of twenty-nine Republicans, six were defeated and ten not, while the Democratic minority of twenty-one sustained only one defeat and two resignations. Death of two representatives and resignation of one member of the house and two of the senate has caused an unusual condition. u u tt There are many legislators who assert that the counties from which these assemblymen came are left without representation and the Constitution provides that they must have spokesmen. The resignations and deaths were known to Governor Harry G. Leslie before he issued a call and coincident with that proclamation there should have been one calling for special elections, they tell me. It is asserted that a death during the session is an accident and therefore no provisions need be made to fill the vacancy immediately, but in the case of Erasmus Sage and Lew Core, as well as the resignations, the vacancies must be filled. When Representative George Saunders of Bluffton died on the opening day of the 193i session, Governor Leslie issued a call for a special election and similar action should have been taken thirty days ago, they tell me. It is a peculiar question and may bob up during the next few weeks. Fix Rites for Fall Victim Private funeral services will be | held at the home Friday for Lyman Jenkins, 44 South Ritter avenue, who was injured fatally when he fell from a ladder Wednesday while painting a house at 513 North Rural street. Burial will be in Crown Hill. .

UEBER SITE LEASED Gas Station to Be Built on City Landmark. Site of another Indianapolis landmark, the old Herman Lieber homestead, at the southwest comer of Michigan and Alabama streets, soon will be occupied by a gasoline filling station. Work of razing the house has been started, following leasing of the site by the Lieber heirs to the Phillips Petroleum Company. The building was erected by Mrs. Barbara W. Heitkam, and was purchased by Mr. Lieber in 1883. Until twenty years ago, when it became a rooming house, it was the scene of social, political and artistic activities Mr. Lieber, who was one of the leading art dealers and collectors in the country, founded the H. Lieber Company.
