DRY ORATOR'S WHIP STINGS OLD PARTIES Prohibition Party Opens Its National Convention in Tabernacle. (Continued from Page One) the dry Democrats confirm the charge of bigotry hurled against them in that year for bolting a wet Catholic candidate and supporting now a wetter Protestant? “If they do, the Lord have mercy on thei rbigoted souls. “Asa late Hoover Republican, I would prefer, if the liquor traffic is to come back, that it be brought by the party of Smith, Raskob and RoOsevelt than by the party of Abraham Lincoln. I decline the invitation to ride into the White House on the brial rail of A1 Smith with a Republican label. "The Republican national committee was divided into two camps, the wringing wets and th ewobbling wets. There were no drys, as we understand the use of the world, in the convention that, four years ago, adopted a platform for maintenance and enforcement of the eighteenth amendment. Not a voice was heard but that of Esau, ready to sell the birthright of the party 'for a mess of politics. Compared to Babel “There never was greater confusion of tongues since the building of the Tower of Babel than the interpretation of the ' Republican leaders, wet and dry, and the Republican press, of the plank on prohibition. “It avoids the word repeal, but provides the method of repeal. “This is the most pitiful example of ducking and dodging and duplicity in the history of American politics. If offers freedom from the saloon to the drys and freedom from prohibition to the wets. “It is a complete surrender to the saloon wherever they want it, and abandonment of national prohibition, the thing for which we have fought and finally won, after three generations.’’ The delegates still were up in the air about a presidential choice. Feeling that Borah had told Colvin he did not desire to head the Prohiibtion party ticket is prevalent, and they are casting about for an aggressive leader. Butler Is Mentioned Name of Smedley Butler, majorgeneral of marines, retired, who was dry candidate for the Republican nomination for United States senator in Pennsylvania, was given much mention, but Colvin said Butler is the party's candidate for senator in his home state. Arthur Barnhart of Chicago, commander of the Saracens, a prohibition, young men’s organization fighting the repeal group known as the Crusaders, was scheduled to be a speaker at the resolutions com- i 'mittee meeting this afternoon. Three former party presidential! nominees will be principal speakers at the open session of the convention tonight in the tabernacle. They are: L. Aaron S. Watkins j of Lima, 0., 1920 nominee; Herman; P. Faris of Clinton, Miss., 1924! choice, and Wililam F. Varney ofj New York, 1928 candidate. Booms Ford—for Money Hi) United Press WASHINGTON, July 5.—A suggestion that the Prohibition party, now in convention at Indianapolis, nominate Henry Ford and insure a $1,000,000 campaign fund, was made today by James Martin Miller, who said he was a former Ford employe on the staff of the Dearborn Independent. Miller telegraphed his suggestion to D. Leigh Colvin, chairman of the convention.

gress through a coalition party composed of men and women opposed to the platforms adopted by the two major parties is the principal bulwark in the prohibition defense. Mrs. Jesse W. Nicholson of Chevy Chase, Md., president of the Woman's National Democratic Law Enforcement League, stated there is no such thing as submitting the eighteenth amendment directly to public vote, and that repeal of the amendment must go through recognized legislative channels. Mrs. Henry W. Peabody of Beverly, Mass., national chairman of the organization, presided at the luncheon, and read a message from Senator William E. Borah, which urged the women to “work for the right men in congress.” Other speakers included: Mrs. F. I. OLDEST FIREMAN TO QUIT SEPT. 5 • Captain Kile to End 47 Years of Service. Resignation of Captain Phillip j Kile, truck company No. 13, the I city’s oldest fireman with a service record of forty-seven years, was accepted today by the board of safety, marking the end of his fight to avoid retirement. His career will end Sept. 5. The veteran fireman has contended that he is 67, but records show that he is 70. He asserted he misstated his age on joining the department, making it appear he was 20 when in fact, he was 17. Charles R. Myers, board president, has indicated that, in view of'the purported misstatement of age, Kile's entire service as a fireman may be deemed illegal, thus making the veteran inelligible to pension. 24 Hurt in Hindu-Moslem Riots Bj) United Press BOMBAY, India, July s.—Rioting between Hindus and Moslems continued unabated today, with twenty-four more injured.
