SAND PILE AND ICE BOX AID IN PLANE BUILDING One Keeps Rivets Pliable and the Other Tests Wing Strength. By f nitrd l*rrsn BERKELEY. Cal.. June 29 —An Icebox and a sand pile were exalted to new scientific heights at the first Pacific . Coast aeronautics meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, here. Both are important auxiliaries in the construction of anew type airplane being built by Dr. John E. Younger, University of California professor of mechanical engineering, and S. H. Capelis, inventor of the original Capelis plane, of which the one now being built is an improvement. Rivets Kept Pliable The icebox is used because of the peculiar properties of the aluminum alloy of which the entire plane is being made. "Usually, rivets are heated to make them soft and workable, then plunged into cold water and used at cnce," Dr. Younger said. "We found that by keeping our aluminum alloy rivets in an electric refrigerator at a temperature ot about 10 degrees Fahrenheit, they retained their pliability for several days." The sand pile will be used soon to fill sandbags to pile on the wings so that critical strength tests may be made after the plane is flown. Ship to Be Fast The twelve-passenger plane now being built at an El Cerrito factory, is a preliminary operation to the construction of high speed transport planes seating from 50 to 100 persons, Dr. Younger said. Test flights of the plane, expected to have a maximum speed of 230 miles per hour and a cruising speed of 200 miles per hour, will be made at Oakland airport, in September. "We believe it will be safpr than the planes now in passenger service,” Dr. Younger declared. Controls Closed In "It is an all-metal, low-wing monoplane with an additional wing about the fuselage and behind the main wing. Although, at first, we will use only two motors and the single main wing, eventually it will have four motors and the other wing.” Fundamentally, the engineers’ plane is of the monocoupp, or box type, without beams or crossbraces. Every feature is streamlined and all controls are closed in to protect passengers from the air streams.
