ROOSEVELT IS WEAK, SMITH'S MANAGER SAYS Hague of New Jersey States He Could Not Hope to Beat Hoover. (Continued from Page One)
remotest chafices, as being preferable to Roosevelt, I deem it my duty as the vice:hairman of the Democratic national I committee, and the leader of the democracy of the state of New Jersey, to call to the attention of the delegations that Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, if nominated. I has no chance of winning at the ] election in November,” said Hague. J "It has been demonstrated in the contested primaries, in which Roosevelt was a candidate, that he never has carried a single large city. ‘‘This clearly indicates that the people in the populous centers do not regard him as the right man to lead. Can’t Carry Big Cities “In the state of California with the entire organization and ’ the Democratic machinery with him, he failed to carry the large centers, and was overwhelmingly defeated. Massachusetts told an even more disastrous story. “It is very apparent that any man who can not carry New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and the other New England states, together with the middle west, and very few states in the far west, is not the man for the party leaders to choose in this crisis. "For the party to select the weakest man before the people, can not bring success, nor alleviate the condition from which our people are suffering. He’s Hope of Republicans “There is no doubt that much misrepresentation was made to leaders throughout this country as to Roosevelt's strength, and as to the individuals and elements in the party that were supposedly backing him. Governor Roosevelt utterly has failed in his last two efforts to sell himself to the press of the country. Editorial comment has been most unfavorable. If that Is their attitude prior to the conventoin, what can the future hold? “It is commonly known that Republican leaders are hoping that Governor Roosevelt will be the nominee, and some publicly have expressed themselves that their only hope for victory lies in -the possibility of Roosevelt becoming the candidate. “I am genuinely interested because the tendency of the people of New Jersey has been to support the Republican national ticket in presidential years. It is only fair as the leader of the party in New Jersey to predict that if Governor Roosevelt is nominated our state will be in the Republican column. Lists Other Candidates “If the right man is nominated we will carry a Republican state which has given 300,000 majority to Republican candidates for President and turn it into a Democratic majority of at least 150,000. “It generally is known that I always have been an admirer and advocate of former Governor Smith. “Entirely aside from my personal desire to see this man be given the leadership at a time when he is so badly needed, I want to call attention to the fact that there's a wealth of material before the convention—Governor Ritchie, Melvin A. Traylor, John H. Garner, Newton D. Baker, Governor White, Governor Murray, Senator Reed, Governor Byrd and Senator Lewis, any of whom meets the present situation better than the Governor of New York.”
NEWS REEL SERVICES AVOID BONUS ARMY Film Companies Refuse to Stir Up Enthusiasm for Campaign. By Bcripyx-tloicard A’tt expay Alliance WASHINGTON. June 23.—The bonus army of occupation encamped here has been shunned almost completely by the moving picture news reel services. Executive orders from the New York headquarters have kept the veterans from appearing in Pox and Hearst pictures, while Paramount has carried one short item in its national service. The Paramount subject was played down in order not to arouse enthusiasm among veterans in other parts of the country. Pathe has carried two subjects, which is said to be that service’s normal run on an event of this importance. All news reel services have cameramen covering the various angles of the encampment here, with orders to make pictures in case of riots or other disturbances. Bryan when he made “sixteen to one" a campaign battle cry. The son, in an address called “Bimetallism, the Way Out of the Depression, quoted his father as follows: You may think you have buried the cause of bimetallism; you may congratulate yourselves that you have laid the free coinage of silver away in the sepulchre newmade since the election. e n u “TJUT, sirs, if our cause is just, as I believe it. is, your labor has been in vain. No tomb ever was made so strong that it could imprison a righteous cause. Silver will lay aside us grave clothes and its shroud. It will rise yet

and in its rising will bless mankind.” Attorney Bryan said he never will forget the thrill of the “cross of gold” speech. “I was proud because my father was giving it and because the crowds cheered him. “But I believe firmly that my father was right and that we will never get out of the depression until bimetallism is adopted, and that its adoption is the only remedy that will bring relief to all the people.” u n BRYAN is a tall, commanding sort of man, genial, pleasantfaced, and with a sonorous voice. He speaks extremely well, as befits the son of one of the country's most renowmed orators.
He is here merely as an observer at the convention. “I never have been a candidate for public office and I never have had political ambitions,” he said. "But I believe it is a duty of citizenship to take an active interest in political matters. - “I have found that one’s party does not alw-ays furnish policies and. platform that one can subscribe to in every detail. Asa private citizen, a voter's freedom of action and belief is much enlarged.” n * * BRYAN was born in Lincoln, Neb., the town that gave to his father the title “Boy orator of the Platte,” but he went west as a youth and has spent most of his life in Arizona and Cali-
fornia. His first active political task was campaigning for George Hunt of Arizona when Hunt ran for Governor. Bryan’s family numbers his wife and three daughters. The eldest is 23 and the youngest 18. MAP PROPERTY SURVEY Mail Carriers to Start Check of Vacant Buildings July 11.
