Eleven days hence, most of the new taxes voted by congress in the $1,118,500,000 revenue bill will become effectiveThe measure, signed by President j Hoover on June 6, provided that most of the new excise taxes and special levies be applied fifteen days later, or on June 21. Excise taxes on various manufacturers will be paid by-manufacturers on all goods they release into the channels of trade on June 21 or; after. The public will begin to feel these taxes as the goods move to distributors and wholesalers and then to the retailer. Some of the special levies, such as that on admissions, will be felt by the public at once on June 21. The new income tax rates—4 per j Cent on the first $4,000; 8 per cent on the next $4,000; and surtaxes up to 55 per cent on incomes over sl,000,000 —will be levied for the calendar year 1932. Returns are due on I March 15, 1933. The 13 : !* per cent! corporation tax is in the same class. Returns also will be due next March on the new estate and gift I taxes, but that tax will apply only to that part of 1932 from June 6 onward, instead of to the whole calendar year. The estate tax ranges up to 45 per cent on estates of more than | $10,000,000. TWO THIEVES ESCAPE Flee After Threatening to Stab Temporary Captors. Threatening to stab their captors, two Negro thieves escaped Thursday night after looting a parked auto in the 600 block on North Illinois street. Several witnesses gave chase to the thieves after they broke a window in the car of Robert Miller, 1726 Cruft street, seizing a suit. The witnesses said one of the men drew a knife as the two were captured nearby. They escaped in an alley.
