THOUSANDS TO END CAREERS IN GRADE SCHOOLS Commencement Exercises Are Scheduled Today and Thursday. Between 3.000 and 4.000 eighth grade pupils In the Indianapolis public schools will receive diplomas at commencement exercises today and Thursday. Approximately seventy elementary schools o t the city are advancing pupils into the secondary schools. A group of songs by the boys' glee club, and another group by the girls' club featured the graduation exercises at Benjamin Harrison school No. 2. at 700 North Delaware street, at 9 this morning. Frank Patocka, captain of the schools traffic squad, presented traffic discharges to the members of his unit. Fifty-seven pupils received diplomas, which were presented by Miss Mary McGee, principal. Girls to Recite Seven girls will recite poems at commencement exercises at George Merritt school No. 4 at 630 West Michigan street. The girls are Dorothy Payton. Roberta Schooler, Rosa Edwards. Margaret Harvey, Bureus McGuire. Ruth Scot- and Mary Dorothy Rogrrs. The school chorus will sing six .selection*, and the boys’ chorus and the girls’ chorus "ill sine. The program will be held at 9 Thursday. A civic project, “The Trial of Mrs. Smith,” featured ceremonies at Horace Mann school No. 13. Noble and Buchanan street*. The graduating class participated. Songs were sung by the department chorus. Nineteen pupils were given certificates. Glee Club on Program Songs by the 8A chorus and the boys’ glee club will be given on the program of Booker T. Washington school No. 17, Eleventh and West streets, at 10 Thursday. The chorus of Abraham Lincoln school No. 18, 1001 East Palmer street, sang five selections at the exercises today. Musical numbers were presented by the 8A girls and bv the 8A boys. Miss Corinne C. Rielag, principal, awarded diplomas. School activities were the theme of the program today at Charity Dye school No. 27, Seventeenth street and Park avenue. Fifteen pupils described their school life. Loy Baxter was awarded the R. O. T. C. Service Club medal Monday at the annual honor day assembly, at Technical high school. A gold piece, presented by Frederic Barker, band director, to the band member who has the neatest appearance at R. O. T. C. inspections. was given to George Carothers at the exercises. Lieutenant Owen and Tim McMahon w-ere unable to hold sectional play at Fall Creek playgrounds Tuesday afternoon. but will conduct matches there at 3:30 Friday. They notified all players attending schools in that section today to be there Friday instead. On Saturday afternoon at 1:30 the Willard park sectional play will be held for pupils of schools Nos. 3,7, 8, 9. 14, 15. 21, 28, 39, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran, St. Joseph’s, and Holy Cross Catholic schools. Next Tuesday afternoon at 2 p. m. the grand finale in sectional play will be held at Willard park. This sectional is for any boy or girl in the city who has missed competing in sectional tournament action in their district. It also will be for pupils of Schools ! 1. 2, 10. 20, 22. 25. 27. 29 , 73. where grounds are covered with loose rock, making rings and play impossible. These schools also are located long distances from parks and playgrounds. All marbles and shooters are furnished by The Times. All expenses of the Indianapolis winner will be paid to | the national tournament in Ocean City, a chaperon provided, and in addition several pleasure jaunts will be made from Ocean City to historical points of interest, swimming parties held in the ocean and other fun fetes provided. Richard Gentry, 11, of 1526 South Meridian street, was the star at | school No. 6. where he won the hon- 1 ors from a big group. All these players will compete in the final games at Willard park. DR. HENRY GETS GAVEL Presentation Made at Meeting of Tuberculosis Association. Word was received here today of the presentation of a wooden gavel to Dr. Alfred Henry, Indianapolis, president of the National Tuberculosis Association, at the association's annual meeting in Colorado Springs, Colo. Dr. Henry, a leader in the fight against the “white plague” in Indiana. was given the gavel by Murray A. Auerbach, executive secretary of the Indiana Tuberculosis Association. The gavel was made from wood of trees grown on the farm near Jasonville, Ind., where Dr. Henry was born. The workshops of Purdue university turned the wood into a gavel.
