ner, bid two diamonds. Mrs. Robertson then responded with three spades and her partner carried her to four spades. The Play The opening lead by South was the ten of hearts, which was won by North, with the king. North returned the queen of clubs, which Mrs. Robertson in the East won with the ace, Mrs. Robertson now made a very thoughtful play—instead of taking the natural finesse in spades, she led the Jack, and. when South refused to cover, took the finesse. This method of playing the spades must not be classed as a lucky guess, nor was it a whim just to take an unnatural finesse. If the queen of trumps were in the North hand and had won the trick, Mrs. Robertson still would be assured of four odd, no matter what North would return, as the dummy
still retained a trump to ruff the ' third club. On the other hand, if Mrs. Robertson plays the king of trumps and takes the natural finesse, she might be held to as little as two odd. This seemingly backhand finesse of Mrs. Robertson's could not lose game .and it stood to win three tricks for her if it was successful. Next—Mrs. Anne Rosenfeld. partner and teammate of Mrs. Robertson, presents her favorite hand.
