LESLIE URGED TO PUT PART OF EXECUTIVE Jacob Weiss Sounds Call for Governor to Act in Emergency. With hi', call issued for a special legislative session July 7, in an attempt to bring about remedial tax ]i .via?son. Governor Harry G. Leslie has been called upon by one member of the Marion county as;embly group “to act the part of an executive.” In a statement. Jacob Weiss, attorney and Democratic representative. who has been nominated for senator, declared: “We hope now that the Governor has recognized an emergency and v. .11 act the part of an executive and truly recommend a program :(i i ipe peciftcaliy with the emerge;.'-. and offer workable suggestion for tax relief and economy." Weiss attacked Leslie for his action at the last regular session.
at Governor We wonder whether hr will folio- h;s precedent established in his ir.f pe to the 1931 assembly by ides and sweetv _ phrases without any specif recommendations for tax re- ; or economy legislation.’’ Weiss representative Clyde Karrer, 1) ir. rrat. said, he will introduce a iiifire for abolition of the public -o commission, “at a saving of SJOn.OOO yearly. ' and the industrial board. H< attacked the industrial board b < <u. h never has been fair to the working people’ and asserted a • :ng of 598.000 would be effected. Representative Fred S. Galloway, Democrat, said he intended to introduce an unemployment insuring bill in the extraordinary session. Hss announcement followed "ports that many legislators would introduce, in the house, bills v.’hich failed in 1931. Galloway’s proposal will be that a luxury tax be levied • and that employers supply 50 per cent of the proposed 65 per cent unemployment insurance, while employed persons pay a small percentage to the general fund. Whatever amount remains to make up the 65 per cent of the unemployed workers’ pay would be met by the state, under Galloway’s plan. ( ailed Wise Move J. Clyde Hoffman, Republican senator, said he believed the special tax session a “wise thing, and I expect something to be accompli lied ” He said he will not offer any measures other than necessary to carry out the tax program. Representative Robert Moorhead. Republican, said he would support measures for tax reductions. He a l-o said he will favor public expense eduction. Representative Albert F. Walsmnn. Democrat, and official of the Indiana Taxpayers' Association, declared the state tax situation is critical and action should be devoted to interest of taxpayers. Leslie was lauded for a “timely and well advised” move by Dr. James H. Green of South Bend, chairman of the executive committee of the Indiana Association for Tax Justice.
Dry Foolers 7J/ L nilrd Prrf * NEW YORK. June 4.—Dry agents here have adopted the strategy of raiding an empty night club at noon, then waiting in possession until the the operators arrive. One of the most exclusive and elaborately furnished resorts in Manhattan was the raiders' objective. The only prisoner was a sleepy doorman taken when he entered to begin work. The club occupied six floors, housing two bars, recreation rooms and dining salons. Furnishings were valued at more .than SIOO,OOO, Agents were interrupted in their search by frequent ringing of the door bell as patrons sought entrance by showing admittance cards.
