LONDON SOCIETY WOMAN HELD IN PARTYSLAYING Mrs. Barney Remanded to Prison; Collapses at Arraignment.

By United Pretn LONDON, June 4 —Mrs. Dolores Elvira Barney, daughter of a knight, figure in fashionable London society and divorced wife of an American singer, was confined to Holloway womens prison today after collapsing when arraigned on charges of murdering Michael Scott Stephen, victim of London's sensational "cocktail party murder mystery.” Mrs. Barney entered court dazed, and had to be led to the dock. She obviously had suffered terribly since the murder, early Monday. Mrs. Barney was remanded for a week and must remain in prison until her next hearing. Her brief appearance today merely was evidence of her arrest and the charge against her. Mrs. Barney collapsed and fell at the feet of Scotland yard detectives after three minutes in the “dock.” Michael Scott Stephen, young son of a banker, was found dying of gunshot wounds in her fine west end home, but the society matron until today had not been detained in the murder investigation. In fact, she had been recovering from shock in the home of her parents. Mrs. Barney, divorced wife of John S. Barney, is the daughter of Sir John Mullens, government broker and a director of the London stock exchange. One of Sir John’s daughters, Avril, married Prince Imeretinsky at

one of London * most fashionable weddings. Investigators from Scotland Yard reached Mrs. Barney's home after she herself had called for police and an ambulance. They heard a story from neighbors of a cocktail party of some two dozen men and women that began in late Monday afternoon and continued until late in the evening. Stephen, the neighbors said, left the Barney residence during the height of the merriment and went away in a taxicab. Mrs. Barney and another woman were said to have gone after him. The party quieted down for a while, neighbors said, but in the early morning a quarrel began. There was shouting and the sound of breaking glass and crockery, residents near the Barney home said. Finally, they heard several shots. Neighbors told police they heard a woman calling, “Come back, Michael,” and later on, “Oh, chicken, chicken, come back, darling; I am sorry.” Francis Richard Stephen. London lawyer and brother of the slain man, identified his brother’s body and said he had been a dress designer in Paris. Francis Stephen testified that his family was opposed to Michael’s going with Mrs. Barney, but that the couple intended to be married as soon as Mrs. Barney was divorced. N. Y. DYERS NAME CZAR Ousted Sheriff to War on Rackets; Gets $50,000 a Year. By United Prett NEW YORK. June 4.—Thomas M. Farley, ousted sheriff of New York county, has been napied czar to stamp out rakceteering in the cleaning and dyeing industry here at a yearly salary of $50,000. A warning came from retailers that if they are assessed to help pay the czar's salary they will be forced to raise the price for cleaning garments.

CONTRACT fll a J e BRIDGE EXPERTS PLAY IT

Famous Hands in Championship Bridge History—No. 12

BY W. Z. M’KINNEY See retarr, American Bridge Learn* 'TnODAY I want to bring you to Cleveland to meet Mrs. Carl T. Robertson, one of the members of the national women’s auction championship team-of-four. This is the second successive time that Mrs.

Robertson has held this title. In addition, the year previous, she and her partner were successful in winning the women’s auction pair championship. While Mrs. Robert so n gets a great deal of pleas ure out of the game of contract, she says that contract so far has diminished the attention which should be paid to the actual play that it

Mrs. Robertson

has resulted in an unfortunate distortion of values. The mass of contract players believe that bidding is practically all there is to learn. The result is the development of a group of excellent bidders who are lamentable players. Mrs. Robertson gives the following hand as her “favorite.” The Bidding South was the dealer. Mrs. Robertson held the East hand and opened the bidding fourth hand with one spade. South passed and East, her part-

ner, bid two diamonds. Mrs. Robertson then responded with three spades and her partner carried her to four spades. The Play The opening lead by South was the ten of hearts, which wac won by North, with the king. North returned the queen of clubs, which Mrs. Robertson in the East won with the ace. Mrs. Robertson now made a very thoughtful play—instead of taking the natural finesse in spades, she led the jack, and. when South refused to cover, took the finesse.
