Hugh Chalmers, who died here Thursday aftr a week's illness, will oe buried Monday in Detroit. Chalmers’ rise to Industrial prominence was in accordance with storybrok traditions. He started as an office bov at the ace of 14 with the National Cash r-'ttisfer Company of Dayton, 0., where he was born. The boy studied in night school. He worked in the daytime, and soon was promoted to bookkeeper and a noerapher. When he was 18. he berame a salesman. Four years later he was vice-presi-dent and general manager of the cash register company. He held this position for seven’years Then the urge to enter the infant automobile industry took him to Detroit. where he bough* into the E. R. Thomas-Detroit Motor Company in 1907 He saw the opponunity for the medium-priced ear in the automobile field, and became president of the companv known as the ChalCompanv Under Chalmers’ leadership, the company. laer called the Chalmers !
