Average Stock Prices
Average of thirty industrials for Wednesday 44 93. up .19 Averafe of twenty rails 14 10, off 20. Average of twenty utilities 18 73, off 101. Average of forty bonds 85 78. off .52 BY ELMER C. WALZER United prtu Financial Editor NEW YORK, June 2—The stock market exhibited a steadier tone today after the list had been carried down to new bear market lows, with utility shares leading. The utility group firmed up from the lows and recoveries w'ere general, so that by noon the market could be termed irregular. Trading was fairly brisk for a time, but it slowed down as the session progressed into the afternoon. Grains rallied after sustaining fractional losses in the early trading. Cotton, however, dipped after early advances ranging to 8 points. The improved tone in the stock market was attributed to anticipation of traders of further efforts to inject credit into business on the part of the committee of twelve banking and industrial leaders refer tlv appointed for that purpose by the governor of the New York Federal Reserve bank. May Form Bond Tool This committee was scheduled to meet today, and it was believed its first move would be founding of a pool to support the bond market. Another favorable factor was word from Cleveland of formation of a committee of fifteen business leaders and bankers of the Fourth federal reserve district to mobilize financial and business interests of four states in a concerted action to revive industry and relieve unemployment. The financial community still was worried over the huge exodus of gold which has been in progress recently. Last night the United States lost gold to the amount of $44,438,000. one of the largest losses recorded for a single day. During May the net Io6S was $216,000,000. On May 25 the monetary gold stock of the country totaled $4,207,000,000, a drop of $808,000,000 from the record of $5,015,000,009 set Sfcpt. 16. 1931. Utility Group Rallies This gold exodus was expected to halt shortly as European confidence was restored by a balanced budget here. This relief helped stem liquidation and stocks firmed up early in the afternoon. Steel common, which touched 254 came back to 264, up 4. American Telephone made a record low at 824, and then rallied to 84 ~ off '*. Atchison rose a point to 25’. in the rails. Auburn Auto was up 2 at 34. Substantial recoveries were made by the entire utility group. Rails were helped by an official report ihr railroad credit corporation had a surplus ready to aid roads meet their July 1 requirements. Mercantile shares 'did not participate in the rally to the extent of the other groups, Woolworth and Macy making new lows.

Proposed change in the city ordinance on picketing was opposed unanimously Wednesday by members of the Indianapolis Kiwanis Club at its weekly luncheon meeting at the Claypool. Henry L. The city council is expected to act upon an ordinance to repeal the picketing ordinance at a meeting Monday night.

On request, sent with stamped addressed envelope, Mr. Ripley will furnish proof of anything depicted by him.
Following is the explanation of Ripley's ' Believe It or Not,” which appeared in Wednesday's Times: The Bridge of the Gods—The Mihashi, or Sacred Red bridge, spanning the frothing mountain stream of Dayi Gawa near Nikko, is one of the most picturesque objects in Japan. It is reserved for the.- exclusive use of the gods of Japan, and the Tonno tSon of Heaven>. official title of the Japanese sovereign. No mortal may cross on it. Its vivid red coloring is traced to the fact that in former days human blood was used to dye it. j The blood donors would slash themselves with long knives to obtain the fluid for the purpose. Mere mortals use another bridge, made of plain granite, to cross the stream nearby.

GRAIN FUTURES SELL GOWN ON LIGHTJUPPORT Weak Cables. Rain Reports Are Factors in Weak Market Action. BY HAROLD E. RAINVILLE United Pre* Staff Correspondent CHICAGO. June 2.—Whear declined another fraction as the Board of Trade opened today. Weak cables. rains over the south and northwest and the general uneasiness over the financial situation kept the market easy. Stocks were steadier, but wheat found little support to offset the scattered selling. Corn showed independence and firmed up. scattered buying on the excessive moisture over the belt and the low level* prevailing bringing in some support. Oats was easy, with September equaling its season's low. Rye was weak, with July setting another new low. At the opening wheat was ' cent to 4 cent lower, com was unchanged to \ rent highpr. oats l cent to \ cent lower and rye * cent to -\ cent lower. Provisions were weak. Liverpool opened about as expectrd and at mid-afternoon was \ rent lower. The rank and file of the grain trade regarded the 5 cents per SIOO tax proposed on futures as confiscatory. This broke wheat Wednesday after an early rise with stocks and on the bullish interpretation of the private reports. The action of cotton in New York, setting new lows for sixty years, also tended to undermine confidence. Liquidation in com after the decline in wheat sent all deliveries into new low ground for the season. Liquidation in the other grains weakened oats and prices are around the lows of the season. Trade is running light. Chicago Grain Range —June 2 WHEAT- Peer. High. Lnw. 11 0b closv.
