Average of thirty Industrials lor Thursday 49 99. up 89 Average of twenty rails 15.94. up .31. Average of twenty utllitlea 20.01, off .03. Average of forty bond*. 68.49. off .66 BY ELMER C, WALZER United Pre*. Financial Editor NEW YORK, May 27—Unexpected reduction in the General Electric common dividend set off more selling on the stock' market today Just when the list was gaining its equilibrium from recent attacks of liquidation. According to preliminary calculation, the Dow, Jones it Cos. industrial average stood at 47.47, off 2.52 points, rail average at 15.37, off 0.57 point, and the utility average at 19.04, off 0.97 point. Sales totaled 900.000 shares, compared with 1.900.000 shares In Thursday's session. Aggregate market value of ten leading stocks was $4,309,014,956. against $4,511,161,820 Thursday, a decline of $202,146,864. Prices of various leaders held relatively steady up to mid-afternoon, when announcement of the slash in the General Electric payment from $1 to 40 cents annually, the second reduction this year, caused heavy unloading of pivotal shares. G. E. Issues Dip General Electric, after holding above 12 during the morning, broke more than 2 points to below the $lO mark, the lowest price yet reached for the present shares. Weakness in this issue quickly spread to other section of the list, sending many issues into new lowground for the bear market. Among these were American Telephone, Consolidated Gas, Chesapeake Ohio. Westinghousc Electric Public Service of New Jersey and other market leaders. Steel common fell more than a point to within a fraction of its low of the bear market of 261*. Declines were not extensive, however, the character of the trading ; being similar to that of the last several weeks. Losses in most cases were limited to several points, alI though a few individual issues like Beech-Nut Packing and American Stores suffered larger declines. News Is Scarce News affecting stock prices again was scarce, traders continuing to withhold buying orders pending some piece of constructive news. Trade reports of the day showed no change in the dull character of general business and the internal correction of the market went ahead independently. Railroad shares slipped off with the remainder of the list, notwithstanding assurances late in the session that the St. Louis Southwestern railway would be recapitalized without resort to receivership. This was indicated by St. Louis dispatches stating that one of the large banks in that city had decided to deposit its holdings of cotton belt 4 per cent consolidated mortgage bonds under the refinancing plan of the railroad which was not sufficient funds to meet its June 1 maturing of more than $20,000,090. Cotton belt 4s on the bond market jumped nearly 10 points to 70 on the news.
