WALZER 1 sited Preas Financial F.dltor NEW YORK, May 28 - Stocks steadied after a further sellofi in the early trading carried all the averages into new bear market lows. The close was irregular with several issues still very weak. According to preliminary calculation, the Dow, Jones <fc Company industrial average stood at 47.69, up (IS* points, railroad average at 15.27. off 0.10 points and the utility average at 19.12. up 0.08 points. Sales totaled 675,473 shares, compared with 305.170 shares last Saturday. Aggregate market value of ten leading stocks was $4,296,887,385 against $4,309,014,956 Friday, a decline of $11,127,571. New Lows Made Curb stocks and issues on the Chicago Stock Exchange were unsettled by breaks in all the Cities Service Company issues following omission of their dividends and those of their subsidiaries. Death of Edward F. Swift set off selling in the Swjft issues on those markets also. The Cities Service group registered losses ranging to 20 points, and all of them made new lows. Stocks were able to overcome difficulties mentioned above and also to override the effects of the reduction to 40 cents annually in the General Electric dividend. The latter stock was dumped on the market in large blocks in the early trading after an initial sale involving 10,000 shares at. 9, off 1 point and anew low for the present shares. Steel common and American Can managed to keep above their bear market low’s, but many leaders, including American Telephone, were not as fortunate. Steel came back from 26' 2 to 27'#, up N at the latter price and maintained a steady tone. Utilities Firm Up Small gains were made nfter early lossej by Allied Chemical, Auburn Auto, Westinghouse Electric Dupont and J. I. Case. Pan-American Petroleum and Transport B soared nearly 3 points to 34. within a fraction of its high for the year. Utilities were unsettled in the early trading in selling, which carried the leaders into new low ground. They rallied with the general list. Rails also steadied after early liquidation. Cotton and wheat eased slightly and bonds were definitely lower with railroad issues under pressure. A feature outside the financial and commodity markets was strength in sterling, which was ascribed to switching by Japanese from dollars into pounds. The yen held strong, indicating that purchase of pounds did not involve sale of yen.
