The last two winters have not been severe. The consequence is, that grasshoppers have become increasingly numerous in parts of the west. Last year they left incalculable numbers of eggs on the ground, and now these eggs are hatching into crawling, hopping masses of insatiable appetite. . While the west watches with apprehension for the coming of a horde of grasshoppers that may work havoc unknown since the eighties, there will appear, early in June, an outbreak of the insect commonly the "seventeenyear locust" Do Little Damage Numbers of these winged creatures will be found in comparatively limited areas scattered over I a very wide range of territory’, ranging from Wisconsin and Illinois on thf west to the Atlantic seaboard, and southward along the Appalachians as far as eastern Tennessee and northern Georgia. These insects by their numbers and their incessant shrilling will cause considerable alarm, but will do little real damage. They arc neither locusts nor grasshoppers.
