INDIANA ROAD FDND EXCEEDS 24 MILLIONS Push Highway Construction Program; Seek Ways to Spend Cash. Indiana's present major industry is the s f at* highway department with its more than $34,000,000 to spend. Commissioners are busy thinking up ways and means to spend this huge sum They are pushing their program so that all money will be obligated and can not be taken away, should a special session of the legislature be called, which seems unlikely. At the commission meeting Thursday, Ralph Simpson, assistant department director, presented a report showing there now is 30 per rent more work in progress on state highways than at any time in department history. Reduction in coat of material, labor and equipment was given as the reason for the department's unexpended balance. The commissioners planned to spend $500,000 on bridge construction, which will mean erection of thirty-five small structures in various parts of the state. It was announced that more than 600 miles of high grade rigid type pavement will be laid, which will be 100 miles more than the previous largest program. Bids have been received on forty touring cars for field men aad bids for thirty more were opened Thursday. The department also is planning purchase of trucks so that the motor equipment will be replaced mostly by the close of the season. Still they have a hard time spending all that money, bids for work being so much below the engineer’s estimate due to the fall in prices. Simpson's report showed that on May 1, the department's general expenditures were $389,281.65 and maintenance $561,989.83. less than was estimated. This will be absoi bed by the purchase of new equipment, he said. Where the money goes also is set out in the report. Allotment of $20,020,928 has been made for construction projects this season. Road construction takes $11,824,802 on the following milages: High tvoe iprlnctoallv concrete! 447.31 mile*, heavy grading 73.82 miles end heavy resurfacing. IC.SO mile*. The bridge department has been authorlred to spend 53.643.933.34. which includes eonst'uction of 14C bridges with mors than a 30-foot span. Ri-hts of wav payments r - ere set out • t 81.000 000. Maintenance construction was allotted $3,550,093, distributed as follows: Heavy grading 6 10 miles: light grading (including widening and shoulders* 379.67 miles, grading to cost $434,101. Pavement wlden.ng with macadam and building of metal shoulders on 86.28 miles is to cost 668.183. New untreated metal stone or gravel road construction on 319.99 miles will be 3370,045. 011 mat construction on 839.11 miles, bituminous mscadam surfacing on 81 03 miles and rock asphalt surfacing on 59 40 miles is to cost $1,958.195 88 Nine miles of guard rail will' be $79 058.37. Structures under 70-foot soan and miscellaneous. Including approaches to bridges and road intersections, will be $643,507.75. After setting all this out, Simpson estimated that it would be posisble to authorize additional construction work costing $2,294,700.95 before Dec. 31, 1932. 5-YEAR-OLD RIVALRY BLAMED FOR KNIFING William Print Charged With Assault With Intent to Kill. Rivalry between two young men for a place on the Woodside basketball team which started five years ago, led to one of them being held to the grand Jury Friday by Municipal Judge William H. SheafTer. The man is William Prinz, 246 Leeds avenue, charged with assault and battery with intent to kill William Black, 236 South Temple avenue. Black was chosen for the place on the team. Shortly afterward he and Prinz engaged in a fist fight as a result of their rivalry. They fought again on April 24 after a quarrel in a poolroom at English and Keystone avenues. Prinz is alleged to have used a knife during the fight. Medical testimony today stated that one of four cuts in Black's back extended to the lung cavity.
