NIP CONVENTION HARVEST PLANS OF RACKETEERS Republican and Democratic Officials Expose Two Plots. Bit f wifed Prn CHICAGO. May 13. - Chicago racketeers have pounced on the Republican and Democratic national convention a* a golden opportunity lor graft, but their contemplated harvest has been halted. At least a dozen "convention rackets" were disclosed by wary convention officials. Some sought to victimize those in charge of arrangements for the big political conventions next month. Others singled out hotels and business houses, and still others the already Tacket-wary Chicago public. Nip Dance Racket One of the most transparent and at the same time most successful confidence games found was the "delegates’ dance’’ racket. A couple of fast-talking racketeers called on an assistant manager rtf on* 1 of the big loop hotels, made tentative arrangements for engaging a ball room, and left a $lO deposit. On the strength of that deposit, thev printed thousands of dollars worth of tickets to a "dance for all delegates and alternates to the Republican convention.” Another similar stunt quickly disclosed hv police and convention officers is the * banquet of welcome to which delegates and alternates to the Republican convention purportedly would be invited. Salesman Not Known Many SIOO and SSO blocks cf tickets for such a banquet have been offered for sale by persons representing themselves to be “from the state/ attorney’s office.” or ‘from county headquarters,’* or "from the city hall.” Suspicious business men who have telephoned to verify the ticket salesman's story have learned he isn’t known at the place he mentioned.
