island of Yap. or Uap, most westerly of the Caroline group in the Pacific, formerly was the property of Germany, but was placed under a Japanese mandate at termination of the World war. A most curious feature of the island is the native stone money, or fei. They are large solid stone wheels, measuring about six feet in diameter and weighing about two tons. This money was brought to Yap many years ago from an island 400 miles away. It represents a great deal of labor in transportation and “coining,” and usually is stored in front of the native huts, completely immune to wiles of a sneak thief.
