CONGRESSIONAL WIVES SHOW UP FOR WORK NOW Those on Pay Roll Try to Earn Wage; Letters Prompt Action. RY RAYMOND CLAPPER fnlteS Prtf* SUIT f •rrtndrnt •Coovrisht. HJI lw United Tress* WASHINGTON, May 12—Congressional wive*, daughters and othrr relatives who are on the lefislative pay roll are showing up for work in increasing numbers a* a result of inquiries from bark home. There has been msny a fam/y council among members of congress since the Uni'M Press recently began describing ihe extensive congressional pay roll racket. Elections are coming and congressmen are giving their wives the choice of working for the salary the' draw, or of being cut off the rolls The result Is that new fare* are appearing around the congressional office* daily A number are going off the pay roll, but the names are being withheld Some congressmen are complaining that although their wives work, thcv are listed with those who carrv nonworking relatives oh the rolls. Voyage f nets Little There is the case of Representative Albert Carter Rep.. Cal.), which might he easily nusunder* s*nod unless one inquired into it. His wife is on the pav roll at about MO a week She left, for California last week to spend the summer, but she is being continued on the pay roll. According to her husbanfj, she will have charge of the congressional office which he maintains in Oakland Mrs. Carter and her nieep sailed Saturday on the Transport Henderson. via the Panama Canal. There is no charge for a congressmans wife or family, except the $1.50 a day mess fee. Thus, for S3O a congressman or his wife can take a trip that would cost at lpast $l2O on a commercial boat for the most modest accommodations. On a navy or army transport a congressman and his wife travel wiih the rank and shipboard services of a brigadier-general. The only tour better known than this Panama canal trip is the great oriental junket to Honolulu, Guam, the Philippine islands. Chum and Japan, which congress takes in considerable numbers during their off summers, carrying wives and members of their families for $l5O a day each in mess fees SI,OOO to Good Congressman Carter does very well on his mileage. Hr is allowed $1.3n0 for a session of congress. His own fare from Oakland to Washington and bark is $274 7 including lower berth. By shipping Mrs. Carter on a government transport, he can come through almost SI,OOO to the good each year. A further report is in ordrr on the case of the fairly wealthy Republican congressman who had his mother-in-law on the pa> roll as attendant in the ladies’ reception room at the house until the Democrats threw her out. A young woman was introduced to her at a party here. "Haven’t I met you sompwhere?" the young woman chirped in an effort to be agreeable. "Yes. I remember you. too.” the lady replied. "I used to work in the ladies’ room in the house.” Nelson Kin on Roll Representative William L. Nelson iDem., Mo.) has an aged father-in-law, W. J. Boschert, on the pay roll, and he has never been in Washington. Congressman Nelson explains, however, that his father-in-law has not received any of the $266 a month he has been drawing for some years except a small amount once for some work he did. SEX GLAND TREATMENT IS USED FOR BLEEDERS Hemophilia Cure Announced by Illinois U. Doctor. NEW ORLEANS. May 12 -Satisfactory results with a new' sex gland treatment for hemophilia, the b'eedtng disease which afflicts among others the family of former King Aiphonso of Hpain. were reported to the American Medical Association at the meeting here today by Dr. Can oil L. Birrh of the University of Illinois College of Medicine. In this disease the patients are nbject to severe, often fatal hemorrhage on the slightest injury or without any injury at all. The new treatment is based on the outstanding peculiarity of the disease, the fact that it u transmitted through women and occur* only in men. The sons of a ’bleeder” will not have the disease, but his daughters' sons may. Reasoning that there must be something in the female mechanism that checks the disease or prevents its development. Dr. Birrh worked out a treatment with extracts from the female sex glands, since these are the factors that determine sex differences. Frequent tests showed that the blood clotted more quickly after the extract was given the children gained weight, grew taller and showed more vitality. CANDIDATE PICKS OUT HIS SEAT IN SENATE Democratic Aspirant sure He’ll Occupy Assembly Post. J. M. Robertson, Democratic candidate for state senator from Jackson. cott and Washington counties. believes in counting his chicken* before they are hatched Robertson, still flushed with the victory of the primary election, appeared Wednesday at the statehouse and accosted Frank Caylor, custodian. “I want to see the senate chamber.” the candidate told Caylor. “I'm pretty aure of being elected, so I thought I'd rome and pick out my seat,” he said. Moon s Phases Declared Important in Planting

In the past, a lot of fun has been had at the expense of those superstitious and ignorant folk, who actually tried to plant according to the position of that luminary. Well, the fact is, it recently nas been proved beyond doubt that planting according to phases and position of the moon makes an astonishing difference in the results obtained. The principal reason for the fact that planting by the moon has been discredited is that the common almanac ts usually worthless. Some of thpm are absolutely misleading, because they insert at the head of their columns "moon'.' sign.” when they mean "moon s constellation." The constellations from a belt outside the Zodiac, but they do not conform in position. The fact is, they are nearly one whole sign different! The most barren sign of the Zodiac come.* next to the moist fruitful, so it may be seen readily that one might think he was planting in a fruitful sign when in reality he was planting in the most barren of all. To obtain the desired results, planting must be done according to the moon’s position in the signs of the Zodiac. A safe general rule .o follow is to plant all things which yield above the ground in the new of the moon and In fruitful signs. On )he other hand, things which yield beneath the ground should be planted in the old of the moon and also in a fruitful sign. Nothing should be planted in a barren sign, but if you want to remove noxious growths so they will be much slower coming back, do so when the moon is in a barren sign. A simple test will show the value of planting by the moon. I have seen it done many times. Take part of a batch of seed and plant it while the moon is in cancer. Plant the remainder when the moon has passed into the sign Leo. I can assure you that you never will be able to tell it is part of the same seed. N. D. V.—Gemini people invariably have excellent manual dexterity. They can sew. draw, play musical instruments mechanically. Understanding and interpretation of music and harmony do not come under this sign. so. if you have a deep understanding of music, you , rightly may assume that some other 1

sign was very strong at the time you were born. Almost all Gemini men are good in handling tools, machinery and driving of automobiles or other means of conveyance. They can do almost anything with their hands, including sleight-of-hand tricks, juggling and balancing. Your birth analysis shows you have many strong Gemini traits, but that other influences would have given you a muen stronger understanding and appreciation of music than your own sign alone would have bestowed. C*. G. S.—Aquarian children are aimost impossible to manage in the same way other children are handled. The sign Aquarius falls between Jan. 19 and Feb. 19. Children born under that influence are almost always unorthodox little souls. They should be given a knowledge of the rules and regulations of social relations and then, to as great extent as possible, they should be allowed to follow their own ideas. They eventually will find themselves in their own way. They are less likely than most children born in other signs, to complete a regular course of schooling. Parents of Aquarius children are very apt to lose their belief in heredity. It is my opinion that your daughter should not be restricted nor compelled to follow' a course of procedure, too closely.
