Ten days in jail and a suspended M 0 fine was the penalty imposed today upon a man who. on Mother's day. stole a watch, a keepsake gift lrom a mother to a daughter. The man sentenced was Oscar Pratt, occupant of a rooming house a' 447 North Alabama street. Mrs. Mildred Lvster. who also is said to live at the Alabama street address, v . fined *5 on a vagrancy charge. Margaret Price, owner of the watch, said she left it in a bathroom. Detectives were told by Pratt that he took the watch with the intention o. pawning it. He revealed its hiding place on top of a por' at an overhead railroad crossing. Attack with a knife following an argument Sunday over room rent brought a penalty of $25 fine and ninety davs at the state penal farm today to Ray Worland. 1548 English avenue. He was convicted in municipal court four by Frank Sisson, judge pro tern. Fourteen stitches were required to close a wound in the face of John M. Callihan. roomer in the Worland home. Callihan asserted he owed no rent, but Worland charged a week's rent was due. An argument that followed brought an attack by Worland, who was armed with a butcher knife. Flies Without Stick flu I niteti l'rr* BURBANKS. Cal., May 9—G. W. Wilbur Cornelius, inventor, has proved to the skeptical that an airplane may be flown safely without a control stick. Before a huge crowd, Cornelius took his “free wing" monoplane into the air, held his hands above his head and aw'ay from the control stick and landed easily after flying for twenty minutes. Cornelius directed the flight by use of his feet on the rudder, and landed by reducing speed. Wings like giant ailerons, reacting to air pressure, keep the plane on an even keel and prevent spinning, Cornelius said.
