GETS MILLIONS FOR VETERANS Legion Obtains $6,488,000 in 1931 Claims. of *6 488.000 for World *V veterans during 1931, through efforts of the American Legion's national rehabilitation committee, was reported today by Watson B. Miller, committee chairman, to the national executive committee. The payments cover disability and death claims. Thus far in 1932 payments have been for a total of •2,169,000, Miller said, and he expects that the annual total will be larger than that of the preceding year. Improvements at the government leper hospital at Canllle, La , are recommended in the report. In accordance with a resolution adopted at the 1931 national legion convention, a committee visited the hospital. It is reported that conditions are as good as can be expected with the facilities available. The inspection committee urged that leprosy stricken veterans receive additional compensation. SNOOTING CASE EVIDENCE HEARD Chappell's Arrest Led to Seizure of Kin. Part of the evidence in the case of Earl Chappell. 1202 North Capitol avenue, whose arrest on a shooting charge caused his mother and sister to be taken into custody in liquor cases was heard today In municipal j court by Ralph Spaan, Judge pro tern. The case will be completed I May 12. when officers who arrested Chappell will be heard. Chappell, charged with shooting with intent to kill, is accused of “saying it with bullets” when Mrs. Ada Reddick, 2230 Ashland avenue, protested against his attentions to her daughter. Virginia. He is said to have fired one shot through a door of the Reddick home and five others into the air. Chappell's mother. Mrs. Mary Chappell, and sister. Mrs. Ethel Burgess, were arrested at the Capitol avenue address while officers were seeking Chappell on the shooting charge. Police said they found liquor.
