Communication with the men was established through use of an iron pipe used to carry compressed air into the mines. Through trapped signals the rescuers learned that none of the men had been injured, that the air supply was adequate, that they would be all right until rescued. Work of digging through the mass of rock and timber in the gangway proceeded slowly because of danger of further falls. After fifteen hours' work, the four were taken out shortly before neon. None of them needed medical attention, reports from the mine said.
