EUROPE FEARS SOVIET-JAPAN BREAK IS NEAR (Continued from Pag t 1) of the London press regard the situation as potentially dangerous. "There are ominous signs that Tokio is preparing for a coup against the Russian-owned Chinese Eastern ; railway," the Herald said. Plot Is Charged B;i United Prcti MOSCOW. April 20.—The Soviet press charged today that white Russians in Manchuria were representing themselves to be secret agents j of the Soviet government in at- j tempting to create the impression that Moscow had sent spies into Manchuria. The press charged the white I guards with instigating recent terrorist acts which were blamed cn Russian reds. The charges were j based on reports from Soviet of- i flcials at Progranichnaya and! Khabarovsk. Japan May Quit League A' <j I nited Prcst TOKIO. April 20.—The League of Nations' latest suggested solution for the Far Eastern question is entirely inacccptable to Japan and tends to increase possibility of Japan's withdrawal from the league, a government spokesman said today. The committee of nineteen resolution provided that Japanese j troops withdraw from Shanghai in the near future; that the league’s mixed commission at Shanghai decide upon the date of evacuation, and that resolutions previously adopted by the league assembly would be complied with only when troops are withdrawn completely. Stimson Sifts Situation BY JOSEPH H. BAIRD United Tress Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, April 20.—Secretary of State Stimson, now in Geneva, has reported to the state I department that European diplomats are interested keenly in the far eastern situation. His report, while giving no details, revealed that Stimson, at the very beginning of his stay in Geneva, has started to work on one of the main objectives of his European trip)—to clarify the diplomatic I atmosphere with regard to the far east. The secretary was represented by those close to him as extremely anxious to know what might be expected of Europe if Japan's ambi- | tions in China were carried further, i Both state and war departments, j meantime, are concentrating atten- ! tion on the tension between Japan 1 and Russia. The general feeling in official circles is that conflict between the two is not imminent, but that the situation in the far east is menacing to world order. According to the best information here, Russia has between 80,000 and JOO,OOO troops on the ManchurianSiberian border. There are rumors in diplomatic circles that Russia also has an enormous reserve of soldiery in outer Mongolia, adjacent to Manchuria, but these have not been verified, SOCIOLOGISTS’ GROUP WILL MEET FRIDAY Program Announced for Two-Day Session at Butler.
