FIND GIRL, 16. WHO VANISHED 7 MONTHS AGO ‘Don't Scold Me,’ Is Plea of Long Island Miss, Located in Mexico. By United Prmn INWOOD, L. I„ April 19.—Sixteen-year-old Florence Fiori, who took S3OO and ran away from her home here seven months ago, is safe at Monterey, Mexico, but she would “rather be dead than be scolded" when she gets back to Inwood. Florence, a spelling champion of Nassau county, wants to go home now after a "Christmas and New Years spent crying," but when she gets there she’ll stay, "if I don’t get the wanderlust again.” Her father, Joseph Fiori, made public a letter from his missing daughter which he received from her two weeks ago. Florence begged for forgiveness but requested there be no reproaches. she wants money to come back, but is being held at the United States consulate in Monterey until it arrives. Traveled on One Heel “When I ran away, 1 ran through our garden, jumped over the fence and lost one of my shoe heels,” the letter from Florence said. “And • o think I had to travel from New York to San Antonio, Tex., on one heel. I slept, one night in the home of n farm woman in Austin, where I paid for a pair of shoes, and bought a pair of white duck trousers and a man’s shirt from her son. Honest, that’s the way I entered Mexico—in pants. “I had such amusing adventures. I was detained by a fat, old Mexican who refused to let me cross the border. I tried to bribe him and I burst into tears, but it wasn’t any ! Use. "Then a short but handsome! young Mexican helped me. He told me to go back to Laredo, stay there overnight, and return the next day. I did and the fat man was gone and the handsome young man let me pass. “Please, Don’t Scold Me” “I’ve been living here with a little old Mexican lady, so I haven’t had any time to get thin. I’m still plump. “If you try to scold me for run- , ning away, I’ll do it again. I can’t bear to be scolded. I know I’m to: blame and I’m willing to beg for ' forgiveness on my knees, but I don t want a single reproach. It’s bad enough to be humble. “If you intend to scold, I’ll never come back home. Never, never. If you can afford my passage, I’ll come home and be Pollyanna again. That is, if I don't get the wanderlust again.” She first was reported in Mexican newspapers as the daughter of an American millionaire. Knocked Down by Street Car John Williams, 75, of 445 Berkley road, was knocked down at Illinois and Maryland streets when struck by the rear end of a West Tenth street car as it turned. He said he was not injured and refused to go to a hospital or physician.

U. S. SMASHES SPEAKEASIES IN CHICAGO DRIVE More Than 100 Destroyed by Federal Agents to Hit Capone’s Purse. BY ROBERT T. LOUGHRAN United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO. April 19.—Gangsters, from A1 Capone to his rattiest hoodlum, are long-faced over the depression in the beer and liquor trade, intensified by Prohibition Director Malachi L. Harney’s speakeasysmashing raiders. More than a hundred speakeasies have been invaded, their bars smashed and their stock of potables j destroyed by federal agents in the last few days. For three weeks, the army of raiders has been recruited secretly, some sixty agents from other cities reporting to Harney here. “George E. Q. Johnson, United States district attorney, and this office planned the campaign weeks ago,” Harney said today. "We are hitting the Capone syndicate and the hoodlums in the pocketbook, where it hurts.” Capone, sitting in county jail waiting for the government to send him to Leavenworth penitentiary to begin his eleven-year sentence for income tax fraud, or to acquiesce in one of his schemes for leniency, is glum. His defense already has cost the syndicate some $200,000 and he needs more money. With speakeasies lowering beer prices and proprietors going out of business in droves, nobody in the gang feels like forking over more money to the “big shot,” especially since there is no money for regular gang pay rolls. Meanwhile, beer and liquor drinkers who are willing to chance being in a speakeasy when the “Federals” smash in, are in luck. Beer has gone from 25 cents down to 15 cents in many places. April 19.—Thirtyfive fewer speakeasies were operating here today as a result of a dry drive launched by 100 prohibition agents, inspired by a pep talk from the prohibition administrator of the district. The army of raiders heard Prohibition Administrator Andrew McCampbell announce that he expected a raid a day from each man who wanted to keep his job. All vacations, he said, were off for some time, until New York is blotted up more thoroughly. G. C. CALVERT HONORED Society of Colonial Wars Elects Him Governor at Dinner. George C. ENGAGEMENT DENIED Chicagoan Says Wealthy Son Will Not Wed Pola. By United Prcap SANTA BARBARA, Cal., April 19.—Dr. Philip Chancellor denied today that his son, Philip Jr., is engaged to marry Pola Negri, motion picture star, as rumored in Chicago recently. "Philip is in Berlin,” his father said, “doing some archeological work. I doubt if he ever met Miss Negri. Besides, Philip is only 24, and, when he marries, I am confident he will select somebody nearer his own age.” The younger Chancellor inherited $6,000,000 from the estate of his
