ITALY BACKING U, S. PLAN AT ARMS PARLEY Grandi Attacks French Proposal for International Army for League. Bp United Preaa GENEVA, April 13. —Dino Grandi, Italian foreign minister, gave immediate approval to the United States disarmament proposals today, and outlined the Italian program for progressiva destruction of the world's armaments. Grandi attacked the French plan for international-armed forces to be placed at the disposal of the League of Nations. He outlined the Italian plan to the general commission of the disarmament conference as follows: Division of all cannons and munitions into three groups, with immediate destruction of the heaviest calibers and progressive destruction of the other groups. Application of the same principle to tanks. Each nation, before the end of each year, shall destroy a stipu- i lated percentage, by categories, of Its total naval tonnage. Abolition of bombing planes by | fixing a percentage to be destroyed annually. Immediate destruction of all j •upplies of chemical gases. The Italian proposals would abol- j ish all weapons, including tanks, ! ■which France wished to place in the service of the league. Turkish and Brazilian delegates indorsed the American proposals.

Cool Welcome for Stimson Bp United Preaa PARIS, April 13—A cool welcome was predicted today for Henry L, Stimson, secretary of state, when he reaches France Thursday en route to the world disarmament conference at Geneva. Stimson will confer with Premier Tardieu, who will return from Geneva, and was expected to pay a courtesy visit to ex-Premier Pierre Laval. But opposition to the United States disarmament plan as an American mbve to isolate France was expected to cool his reception, as far as the press and politicians generally were concerned. French fears of an Anglo-Ameri-can "understanding” were increased by the fact that Sir John Simon, British foreign secretary, approved the disarmament proposals submitted at Geneva by Ambassador Hugh Gibson. AUDITORS TO FIGHT COUNCILMEN’S POWER State Association Will Support “Independence Measure.” Assailing the power of county councilmen and commissioners over county auditors, the Indiana Auditors’ Association, in session at the Washington Tuesday, proposed to introduce a bill in the 1933 legislature blocking control of auditors by county officials. The proposed bill would revise salaries of auditors and their office personnel on a. basis of county population, fixing definite salaries j by statute. With such a law, auditors con- j tend, they would have a free hand to refuse payment of surplus expenditures, and could save thousands of dollars in governmental costs without fear of reprisal. CLAIM MURDER MOTIVE State Tushes Case Against Frank- j fort Wife Siayer Suspect. - I Bn T'nited Prraa FRANKFORT. Ind„ April 13. | Two points on which the state 1 places its greatest hopes for conviction of Richard H. Gladden, on a charge of murdering his wife, were before the jury as the state's case moved rapidly toward completion 1 today. Both a motive and the method of j causing death were built up by the ! state; first, in testimony by William Armantrout that he sold Gladden insurance which would yield him $8,200 in event of his wife’s death by carbon monoxide gas; and. sec- j end. in testimony that a piece of j rubber tubing was found in the I death car. The state contends that Gladden ! used this tubing to carry the poison fumes to the seat occupied by his wife.
