JOSEPH LEITER, WHEAT KING OF NINETIES, DEAD Chicago Sportsman Once Lost $10,000,000 Trying to Corner Market. By United Prrtt CHICAGO, April 12.—Joseph Letter, Chicago capitalist and sportsman, whose gigantic attempt to corner the wheat market in the 90's, cost him more than $10,000,000 before he recouped this fortune in later ventures, will be honored in funeral services today. The 63-year-old Chicagoan, who once dreamed of owning the world’s
■wheat supply, battled with relatives over the Levi Z. Leiter estate, and who was termed a “nomad” by the New York supreme court, died at his Chicago home Monday. Death was at-< tributed to heart disease and pneumonia. His
widow, a son and daughter survive. Letter’s dramatic life was cut in the pattern of the daring visionaries who built a titanic Chicago out of • mud-flat pioneer village. In later years, Letter became interested in horse racing. His stable was estimated to represent an inventment of $500,000. He was ruled off Arlington park race track last year when he termed disqualification of one of his horses “a damned outrage,” but soon was reinstated.
Among the spectacular things which gave him public notice was the raiding of his $300,000 liquor vaults in Washington. At one time it was said he purchased 111 pairs of hose at sl2 a pair. After -graduation from Harvard university, Leiter plunged into the Chicago financial world dominated chiefly by his father, Levi Leiter; Marshall Field and Philip D. Armour. Leiter controlled $30,000,000 of the Leiter properties in 1897, when he started to buy wheat at 73 cents a bushel. The following spring he held 18,000,000 bushels of cash wheat and 22,000,000 of futures, and had forced the price to $1.85 for anew high. Philip D. Armour had sold Leiter 9,000,000 bushels of the grain, but found himself without a bushel as the delivery date approached. He offered to buy Leiter out, but the young speculator refused a $4,000,000 profit, believing he could send prices higher. Armour countered by sending icebreaking tugs to open the water routes to Duluth. There Armour bought 18,000,000 bushels of wheat, which he dumped on the Chicago mart. The Leiter corner collapsed, wiping out the paper profits and $10,000,000 more. In 1908 the young sportsman, known in society’s gathering places for his booming laugh, and his white waistcoats and gray stovepipe hats, married Miss Juliette Williams, belle of Washington society. DELAY WEBSTER RULING Geckler Withholds Judgment in Child Neglect Case. Juvenile Judge John F. Geckler •today withheld judgment on a child neglect charge brought against Irving Webster, Indianapolis publisher, facing two to fourteen years’ imprisonment following conviction two years ago for blackmail. Mrs. Webster charged Webster with failing to pay $8 weekly for support of three children after she obtained a divorce in December. Geckler also ordered an agent appointed to collect funds said to be owing the publisher and directed that Mrs. Webster be given the money. LUESSE PLEA IS SLATED Business Men's Petition to Be Given Farm Trustees. Petition of Indianapolis business men for the release of Theodore Luesse, imprisoned unemployed leader, will be presented to trustees of the state farm at a meeting tonight. The petition first was filed with Governor Harry G. Leslie and was referred to the board of the institution.

ASSAILS PHONE RATES Hiner, Governor Candidate, Demands Explanation of Costs. An attack on the rates charged by the Indiana Bell Telephone Company was made Monday night over station WKBF by Ward Hiner, independent candidate for Governor, who demanded a public hearing on the question. Declaring that its rates are exorbitant, Hiner said: “The Indiana Bell Telephone Company must realize that nine or ten years ago, we were paying $4.50 a month for an unrestricted business telephone and today we pay approximately sl3 a month for similar service. The telephone company also charges 25 cents monthly rental for the new type receiver. All of these charges should be explained.” URGES TAXI PRIVILEGE Morrissey Would Permit Cabs to Park in Front of Hydrants.
