LABORATORIES DENY ANIMALS ARE MISUSED Humane Society Prepares to Take Court Action on Cruelty Charges. (Continued From Page 1) Ray, also a member of the humane society, who supported Hargon’s assertions by claiming that last year he Insisted that the company clean up its laboratories. Conditions Held Better “Conditions today,” said Hargon, “are vastly improved over last year. Then the Pitman-Moore Company had its dogs living in the filthiest kind of squalor, bunched up in pens without room to turn, and very little clean water to drink.” “It is customary in an institution such as this,” said Dr. Showly Regenos, laboratory director, “for visitors to ask permission of the office before ‘surveys.’ “Our plant is open to all, but there is no laboratory in the country where a person is free to go just v.'here he pleases at any time. “Mr. Hargon, I understood, has been out here many times. He never has visited me, and I do not know the man. As far as his charges go, they are untrue, and he personally never has made a complaint here.” Hargon claimed the federation forced the laboratories to clean up, and made the charge that the company has been buying stolen dogs.
Progress Is Cited The company operates on the animals by injecting a needle into the heart and drawing off a quantity of blood. The dogs are operated on about every fifteen days, an attendant said. Hargon insists use of all animals ih laboratory work is inhumane. “The progress of science,’’ said Dr. Regenos, “comes from experimentation with animals. Consider the products that come from lab-oratories—anti-rabies serum, antidiphtheria toxin, anti-hog cholera serum, scarlet fever toxin, antitetanus serum and many others. “We don’t use pure-bred dogs. We take an ordinary, healthy dog, and then It takes two to three months of treatment before that dog is ready to be bled. No Injury to Animals “There is no sign of weakness in any animal after bleeding. One dog can save the lives of many dogs, and, indirectly, the lives perhaps of children and adults. That is not inhumane. It is the march of science.” Hargon assailed actions of dog thieves. “Many persons who lose their pet dogs really are the victims of dog thieves who make a profession of it. The dogs are taken to the chemical laboratories and sl, $1.25 or $1.50 is paid for each dog,” he said. “We are out to get these dog thieves and we have several leads. We are ready to arrest and prosecute them. Many persons who. lose their dogs would be sickened to learn the fate of their pets. Cruelty Is Charged • “Why, they use some of these dogs for their operations from the time they are pups. It is absolutely inhuman. “We’re going after the thieves and then perhaps w’e will file charges against the laboratories. It certainly is cruelty to animals and they’ve tried too many ways of keeping it from the public.” Hargon also declared that the company should use an anesthetic in its operations on dogs and horses. Dr. Regenos asserted an anesthetic is not used because it might be dangerous to the product. “There is no pain in the operation,” he said. “The only pain comes in the piercing of the skin. Under the skin there is no feeling, and the operation is done so quickly there is virtually no pain at all."
