JIM WATSON IN CITY ‘TO TALK MATTERS OVER' Senior Senator Cites Need of Immediate Action on Tax Bill. Looking younger and evidently in the best of spirits, Senator James E. Watson, leader of the senate majority, went into a round of political conferences and interviews today. He announced the senate would pass a tax bill speedily. “We must do something quickly about the situation because industry in the nation practically is at a standstill,” Watson said. “There is no doubt that if the house had passed the sales tax it would have been shot through the senate. ‘‘l believe we have enough votes In the senate to pass a tax bill. Passage Imperative “I would rather have a measure, that is fairly good, passed speedily than delay months and then pass a better bill. “It absolutely is imperative that we have a tax bill passed and signed in a month if industry is to start moving." Watson said he visited the house during debate there on the tax bill —“it was like going from a graveyard to the zoo with all the animals turned loose.” "The representatives also reminded me more of a swarm of bees that had lost their queen than anything else. They circled around looking for leadership, and then, becoming angry, bit any one coming near, finally ending up in biting each other,” he said. Favors Mrs. Vestal Watson said he and Governor lieslie were to talk over the special election to fill the vacancy in the old Eighth district created by the recent death of Congressman Albert .Vestal. .“In my opinion Mrs. Vestal should be given the seat, for the term will run only a few more months,” he said. Watson obviously was amused by the reception given here in the state to his presentation of George R. Dale, mayor of Muncie. charged with booze law violations, to the attor-ney-general. "When I was told that the Democratic congressmen Avere milling around trying to find a way to keep from introducing the mayor, I felt that, it was only right that a Hoosier should have every courtesy and so I called the attorney-general,” Watson said. “I told him I didn’t know anything about the case.” With a twinkle in his eye he said: f ‘So the people like it, eh?”

Stephenson to restrain Warden Walter Daly of state prison here from “listening in” on the prisoner's conferences with legal counsel, was sent to Porter superior court today on a venue change application of his attorney, A. R. Jenkins, Gary. Daly was represented by Harry Taylor and Early Stroup, the latter an assistant attorney-general. Stephenson did not appear in court. Daly, John Moorman of the prison board and Russell Blande, prison clerk, were present. The hearing in Valparaiso will be before Judge Mark Rockwell, and Stephenson will appear in court there. The petition charges Daly issued an order to prevent Stephenson from conferring privately with attorneys, or holding any communication with them except in presence of the warden. Attorneys, the petition alleged, were restrained from making any notes or memoranda except in Daly’s presence and with his consent.
