HOOVER DROPS I' EDICT AGAINST HAND-SHAKING Campaign Year May Have Something to Do With Restored Visitors’ Lineup. J! >/ Unite* Prrtt , WASHINGTON, March 25. V/hether because it is election year or otherwise, handshaking with President Herbert Hoover at the White House, once eliminated as a waste of time, rapidly is being restored. Every day for the last month, anywhere from two to a score or more of persons have been received by the President in his office at noon. Thursday at least thirty person 1 shook the chief executive’s hand and wcr.t on their way with a smile. ■ The thrill of meeting the President of the United States brings them fam all parts of the country for this brief word, a smile and a handshake. AH Sorts of Persona In Thursday’s group, for example, there were half a dozen actresses i from a New York revue now ap- j pearing In the capital, a policeman ! in"unlform, an elderly woman from Louisiana, families with father, mother, sister and young brotherall sorts of persons. They came a nr:f hour early, some of them, and took seats on the cushioned chairs i in the lobby until told to line up. Patrick McKenna, natty, grayhaired czar of the reception lobby for the last twenty years, takes them in hand. He sees that they line up in the lobby. A secret service attache opens the door to the President’s private office. Just inside, the President, with another secret service man opposite ! 'him, receives them. He is genial, I smiling and has a word for each. Groups Growing Larger "How do you do?” he responds to j their bow and greeting. "Glad to see you,” he sometimes varies it. ; That is all. A quick, though cor- ! dial, shake of the hand and he is ready for the next visitor. They follow along quickly, with , McKenna outside seeing they go in single file. "Step along, please,” he exhorts j them whenever the line begins to I crowd up at the door. “Please j don't loiter.” The groups have become progressively larger in recent weeks, but still are far from the proportions reached during the Coolidge administration, when 200 to 300 persons noon filed through the offices to shake the President’s hand. The Philippines are represented in congress by two resident commissioners, who are selected by the Philippine legislature. ART SAYS:
