OBSERVES HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY BACK IN PULPIT Dr. G. E. Hiller Left Ministry in 1923, but Welcomes ‘Comeback.’ A white haired man, who reads either English or German without the aid of glasses, and who is completing the writing of his fourth hook, Dr. G. E. Hiller, 2431 Park avenue, celebrated his eightieth birthday today in the pulpit. He delivered a sermon at Good Friday services in the New Jersey street M. E. church, speaking on ‘ The Seven Words of Jesus on the Cross.” Dr. Hiller, who came to America from Germany when 2, entered the ministry sixty years ago. Although he admits having forgotten his arrival in the United States, Dr. Hiller says he can remember happenings in Chicago when he was 3 or 4. And, most of all, he remembers the Indian massacre in a Minnesota village when he was 10. He said the death raid was led by Little Crow of the Sioux Indians and 300 residents were slain and homes destroyed. Dr. Hiller, although he “retired” from the pulpit in 1923 to write, - oftrn has returned to preach, “whenever the opportunity comes.” Dr. Hiller now is writing “A Believer’s Critique of the Bible." Says he of the United States future: “I believe, this country is destined to fall, as have the great civilizations before it, because of the greed of those at the head of the present economic system.’' FARMERS ARE WARNED OF LOCUST INVASION Grasshoppers Also Are Expected to Be Numerous This Year. Jl)i United Prrtt LAFAYETTE, Ind., March 25 Swarms of grasshoppers or locusts probably will invade many states west of the Mississippi this summer, J. J. Davis, Purdue university entomologist, predicted in a statement today. In 1931, the outbreak was most severe in South Dakota and north and central Nebraska, where hay, alfalfa, grains, and corn were destroyed. In other parts of these two states, and in lowa, Minnesota, and parts of Wyoming, Kansas, Montana and Colorado, the insects were serious pests and caused considerable damage. If farmers are to rid themselves of the pests this year, Davis said, prompt use of poison bran baits will be necessary. In Indiana, the insects were of varying intensity, but they will return In 1932, probably in greater numbers, Professor Davis predicted.
