UNDERWORLD CHIEFS WAGE FIGHT ON DALE Several Accusers of Mayor Have Criminal Records in Muncie. (Continued From Page 1) committee cleared everyone in sight—but Williams was told to refund the $2,600, for some inexplicable reason, and he did. And Dale was responsible for spoiling the well-laid plans of the spoilers. This explains, in part, the enmity of Cranor toward Dale and his interest in the present case. Scoff at Protection Charges Friends of Dale say charges that criminals operated under a protection system arc shattered by a check of police records, which show that several of them were driven out of business by constant raids by Dale’s police force. H. Vernon Walburn better known as "Plug”—is reported to have said that he paid protection money to Dale. Police records show a succession of raids against his place. Dale stationed a policeman in Walburn’s place on South Walnut street, to write down the name of every patron who entered. Business suffered, so Walburn abandoned his upstairs gambilng house, and installed a craps game in the rear room, with buzzer in front to warn the players. Foiled in their efforts to trap the gamblers, two police squads swooped one night on the place, crashed the rear door with a raflroad tie, charged through the front door with fire axes, and wrecked the joint. Walburn went out of business then and there—and became an honest apple peddler. One Link Breaks “That's a sample,” declared one police official today. “If that’s protection, I wonder what would happen to sofhc one we didn’t like.” Boast of federal operatives and their stoool pigeons for weeks before the indictments were returned was that they had Dale and his police chief, Massey, “hooked” on a resale of confiscated liquor. They intimated to reporters that 253 gallons of liquor confiscated in a. raid of the farm of Elmer Gentry, deposed king of the Muncie underworld, had been sold to Corbett Johnson, who then operated a farm in Blackford county, near Hartford City. The "evidence” was regarded as certain to convict Dale—until federal agents suddenly discovered, according to Dale, that the liquor had been poured out in Muncie police station by one of their fellow sleuths, spoiling their resale story. Stories of witnesses quizzed by federal agents in their headquarters in the Y. M. C. A. indicate that witnesses were told what they were to testify, rather than queried what they knew of the situation. Fears Perjury Rap A sample is the case of one alleged collection man for Dale. This man, a bootlegger and gambler, who prospered under the Hampton regime, when Muncie ran wide open, was harassed by Dale’s police until his business was wrecked. “You, George Dale, and a police official, sat on Dale's back porch one night and arranged a deal that would give you a gambling concession with ample protection,” he told Dale the federal sleuths informed him. "Now, come clean on it.” Incidentally, Dale's house, at the southwest corner of North Jefferson and East Gilbert streets, has no back porch. It has a front and side porch, directly under the glare of street lights. “I told them,” the gambler says, •‘that after what Dale did to me, I wouldn’t dare to go near his house, let alone proposition him to get protection for a gambling house. I’d rather take the rap for running a gambling house which I hadn’t operated than take a chance on what Dale would do to me for perjury like that.’’ Tastors Uphold Mayor Two Muncie pastors, who asked that their names be withheld, today declared that Muncie, under Dale’s administration, has been a cleaner city than at any other time they could recall. "I do not know personally of an instance in which a city pastor has complained of laxity on the part of

Left to Right—J. E. Johnson, Mayor Reginald Sullivan, F. W. Addison
Plans for giving work to approximately 1,000 of Marion county's unemployed is announced by F. W. Addison of Firestone Service Stores, Inc., Michigan and Delaware streets. He is sponsoring sale of service books at 25 cents each, the money to be kept by the seller. Books can be used at the store and
the city administration in curbing crime and vice,” he declared. "And, you know,” he added, "if there is even a suspicion of neglect of duty on the part of the mayor or the police department, we are going to speak up.” For the first time in the last twenty years, Muncie today has no criminal bearing the dubious title of "king of the underworld.” For years this was the appellation of Elmer Gentry, one-time proprietor of a notorious Muncie underworld resort. Gentry and his wife, now r accused of participation in bank robberies in this section of the state, prospered mightily on vice, booze, and gambling. Now they are through, due largely to relentless hammering by George Dale. Pete Barlow, baby-faced blond who aspired to Gentry’s crown, is in prison, under a stiff sentence, sent there by Dale. His wife, Nora Barlow, died in the Indiana Woman's prison in Indianapolis, where she was sentenced In Dale's campaign to clean up the city. Mayor Dale today worked on plans for his defense against the federal charges. He will be arraigned Thursday with the dozen others indicted in the same case, in federal court here. COUNCIL DELAYS CHOICE Defers Selection of Successor to F. S. Fishback Until Tuesday. Selection of a successor to Frank S. Fishback, county council president, who resigned last week after condemning “rubber stamp” tactics of the council, will be made at a meeting Tuesday, it was indicated today. Councilmen met this morning to made the selection, but failed to agree on appointment of one of four passible candidates mentioned. Action on appropriation of money to buy licenses for county trucks also was delayed until Tuesday. LEGALS Legal Notices c,. hl , NOTICE to bidders and the l s? a ti? e j!
