NEW CORONER PUTS FAMILY RIGHTS FIRST Policy to Be Followed in Office Is Announced by Dr. Arbuckle. Rights of families will be given first consideration in death cases under the policy announced today by Dr. William Edward Arbuckle of 1759 West Morris street, new county coroner. ”1 want the family absolutely satisfied. I intend to treat families of death victims as I would want my own family treated, with fairness and courtesy to all concerned, ’, he said. With this platform, Dr. Arbuckle succeeded to the office by appointment Saturday, after Fred W. Vehling resigned. Arbuckle will serve until Jan. 1, 1933, completing Vehling's unexpired term., May Be Sued Vehling probably will be sued by county commissioners for alleged j overcharges for autopsies performed during his term In office, Commissioner Dow W. Vorhies said today. Investigators were checking county auditor’s records to determine amounts due. Vehling, recently convicted by a criminal court Jury of soliciting a bribe in a death case, presented his resignation to county commissioners Saturday. During the sixteen hours after he I assumed the office, at 12:30 Saturday, Dr. Arbuckle investigated six deaths. He was assisted by twoj deputies, whom he appointed Saturday. They are: Dr. E. R. Wilson of 2830 East Vermont street, and Dr. | John E. Wyttenbach of 1503 North i Pennsylvania street, who succeeded [ Vehling’s appointees. Two More Schelduled Two more deputies will be chosen by Dr. Arbuckle this week. Prosecutor Herbert E. Wilson is arranging for sentences of Vehling who faces a two to fourteen-year prison sentence and a maximum fine of SIO,OOO. Special Judge Fred C. Gause will pass the sentence. Wilson today dismissed impeachment proceedings filed in circuit -court against Vehling before the coroner was placed on trial. Vehling’s resignation automatically would have nullified the proceedings. Arguments on a motion to arrest judgment in Vehling’s case will be heard by Gause Wednesday morning. In event the motion is denied, Vehling’s attorneys said a motion for anew trial will be filed. Dr. Arbuckle, a runner-up against j Vehling in the Democratic primary two years ago, has announced he will be a candidate in the May primary this year to succeed himself. Votes of two Democratic members of the board of county commissioners, Dow W. Vorhies and Thomas Ellis, put the new coroner in office. George Snider, Republican member, nominated Dr. R. R. Coble, a Republican, for the post. Graduated in T 6 Dr. Arbuckle was graduated from the Indiana university medical school in 1916 and has practiced in Indianapolis since, with an office at 1156 Lee street. He was born ! in Jefferson county where he lived until 20. He is married and has one child. “I will do all in my power to re- j store the office to the high plane to which it should be held,” he said. ‘'Under the circumstances, it is no great pleasure to accept the appointment.” Both Dr. Wilson and Dr. Wyttenbach are Indiana university medical school graduates, members of surgical staffs at Indianapolis hospitals and have offices in this city. Dr. Wilson, formerly house surgeon at the Indiana Christian hospital, has an office at 2838 East Washington street, and Dr. Wyttenbach at 422 HumeMansur building. Action Is Halted In his letter of resignation, Vehling said: “In my judgment I am innocent of any crime or criminal intent; but, in view of the situation I am now confronted with, and being seriously handicapped at every step that I attempt to make, I feel that in fairness to the people of Marion county and to my friends that I should at this time resign.” The resignation automatically halts impeachment proceedings pending against Vehling in circuit court. Vehling’s attorneys were to petition Gause today for an arrest of judgment. Births Girls Willard and Icel Rigdon, 816 East Twenty-first. Niles and Mary Patterson, 3732 North Adams.
