FIRE ON HOOVER HELD IN CHECK ' BY DEPRESSION Democrats, However, Irked by G. 0. P. Claims, Start War on President. BY RAYMOND CLAPPER United rreaa Staff Correapondent WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.—Republican efforts to “build up” President , Herbert Hoover for the presidential campaign have brought retaliation from the Democrats. For weeks Democrats have been speaking for and voting for White House reconstruction measures. The ■iiiass-Stcagall credit expansion bill was introduced and steered through both houses by Democrats. Whatever liability the depression has been to President Hoover it has saved him from a good deal at the hands of the Democrats. The La Follette-Costigan direct unemployment reli&' bill was killed with the help of Democratic leadership. Few Rewards Are Given Thus far, the reward of the Democrats—except for two choice appoints on the reconstruction corporation board—has been virtue’s own reward, and the privilege of listening almost every evening to radio speeches by Republicans which laud the President’s reconstruction program, and ask why the Democrats had no program to offer the country. They are beginning to feel bitter against this. Instead of drafting their own economic program and precipitate endless fighting in congress over rival party plans, they have co-operated in supporting ad- j ministration measures, most of j which were worked out in conference with Democrats. Democrats Grow Angry Naturally, they grow angry when i a Republican speaker claims ail I the credit on behalf of the admin- ; istration. Mr. Hoover has been scrupulous to! emphasize that the reconstruction | program is nonpartisan. But this ; is too fine a line for most of the j Republican speakers to draw. Within the week, Speaker John 1 N. Garner, Senate Democratic Leader Joseph T. Robinson and j two of the principal Democratic lieutenants in the house have chided the administration. There will be more of it as the presidential campaign progresses. LANDSCAPING WILL BE HOME SHOW FEATURE Model Home to Be Open to Public Week From Sunday.
