WAR IN CHINA HURTS JAPAN. SAYSTROTSKI Mikado’s Empire Weakening Self by Conquests; Sees No Soviet Move. By United Preet NEW YORK. Feb. 19.—Leon Trot&ki, leading figure, of the Russian revolution, now in political exile, believes japan is weakening herself in her present adventures, that China is awakening, that the Soviet Union has nothing to fear from Japan in Manchuria, but must fear war with Germany should Adolf Hitler and the German Fascists rise to power. Trotski gives his views in the current issue of Liberty. "The Manchurian crisis admirably has exposed the self contradictory importance of the league of nations,” he wrote, “this act of aggression has grown out of two things—the successful putting down of a revolution in China, and consequent weakening of the Chinese nation, and the oncoming of a revolution in Japan. "Japan is trying to distract her restive masses by pointing to the abundant land in Manchuria—trying by this adventure to resolve the contradiction between modern capitalism and her old semi-feudal state regime—just as the Russian czar did in 1904-05. “But Japan will become more and

Grim Game By United Prut NEW YORK, Feb. 19.—Four small boys were playing funeral in front of a Brooklyn police station. Nine-year-old John Elliott was the “corpse.” He was placed in a covered cardboard box. His three companions dragged the box along the street toward Greenwood cemetery. A large police wrecking truck approached, honking its horn. The three boys dragged the "coffin” to the curb when t they saw the truck bearing down on them. Then they fled. Patrolman Ott, at the wheel of the truck, believing the box was empty, swung in to the curb. The front wheels crushed the box. Little John was killed.
more deeply involved in Manchuria; discontent at home inevitably will follow, and Manchuria may well prove the Morocco of the Japanese monarchy. “Any desire on the part of the Soviet Union to intervene in this process categorically must be denied. “This is not, however, because of weakness of the Red army. But with Japan inevitably weakening herself by this adventure, and with China as Inevitably awakening and approaching the day when she will be able to speak her final word, it is obvious that the Soviet Union has no reason for hasty action in the Far East.”

ner was a leading member,’* said McAdoo. “I came, therefore, to now him intimately and to have the opportunity to Judge, under the severe test of complicated problems, the quality of his mind and the measure of his ability. “I was greatly impressed by his sound judgment, by his broad comprehension of political, social and economic problems, by his integ-rity-moral and intellectual—and by his high character and practical ideals. “His elevation to the speakership was not a matter of chance, but a recognition of twenty-nine years of able and distinguished service in the house of representatives. * “Mr. Garner has unusual knowledge, acquired by hard work and experience, of the problems of government. He would bring to the presidency just the equipment that is sorely needed to direct the af-
