Army Seen Dictator of New Styles “lUs smart to be patriotic," Miss Helen Ready of William H. Block Company told members of the Columbia Club and their guests at the February luncheon-bridge party and style show Wednesday. Miss Ready spoke of the military trend of the mode. "The United States army and navy, rather than Paris, is behind the style movement this spring,” Miss Ready said. The line, or silhouette, is decidedly military, clearcut and dashing, and worn with an air. The formerly fashionable slouch has been replaced ' with the more becoming •shoulders back, chin up and eyes flashing’ air.” Lines on "Up and Up” "Lines,” Miss Ready continued, ‘are on the up-and-up. The empire trend is shown in evening gowns, rhe b-st line is accentuated often with a cowl neckline or shirring directly in front. "Sleeves are varied, with the ‘rhumb*’ the favorite, and Jackets are shown with everything. Scarfs lend a bright note to neutral costumes and tabs, metal buttons and drapes further emphasize the military note. "The primary feeling is that the clothes are ‘wearable,’ comfortable and smart, with a fitted look and easy movement.” Sheen Gone From Fabrics Miss Ready said that the sheen has gone out of fabrics and has been replaced by a dull finish. Woolens with a rough surface and sheer woolens again are being shown. "Laces,” she said, "are staging the biggest comeback since Floradora days.” "Red, white and blue lead the color march, with black and white smarter than ever. Beige is looming in importance with other new shades—Yorktown red, Hessian green, Lafayette blue, faded cadet blue and Manhattan brown. Miss Ready’s talk was illustrated by models who displayed the new styles for daytime, late afternoon and evening.

IS there something on your mind? Unburden yourself to Jane Jordan, who always is glad to hear from you. Your letters will be answered in this column. Dear Jane Jordan—l am a man twice divorced. I still believe that the best chance tor happiness lies in marriage, in spite of mv signal failures to realize it. My father and my mother were mated ideally as were my grandparents ’ on both sides. Or at least they seemed to be. It looks to me like there are more unhappy marriages today than there used to be. Do you agree with me. and what is your opinion of the cause of the increase of unhappy marriages? GRASS WIDOWER. Dear Grass Widower—People today are more acutely conscious of unhappiness in marriage than they used to be. The decrease of the odium that attaches to divorce makes them less resigned to spending thier lives with a disappointing partner, when easy escape is passible. Freer social and business relations between men and women have made it easier for persons to find companions who outshine a husband or a wife who has proved unsatisfactory. Many a man would be living with his wife today, reasonably content, if he had not chanced to meet a woman whose charms were greater, and vice versa. The more highly differentiated we become the more our tastes and interests differ, the harder it is to find a companion who fits into our scheme of things. Persons with varied pursuits require partners capable of following them with lively interest, and naturally are disappointed when such interests fail to hold up after the honeymoon. The more complex people become, the harder it is to find happiness in marriage. It is easy to see that if every woman were more or less like her sisters, there would be nothing more for men to search for. Or if there were only a shade of difference between men, a woman would tend to be satisfied with what she has, since there was nothing better to hope for. These are only a few of the difficulties in the way of modern marriage. Possibly our parents and grandparents made as many mistakes as we do, but did not make so much fuss about their frustrations. Here are some letters that our readers have written to each other. # * * Dear Puzzled Girl—A girl who has self respect is a girl I could adore. I have been through the “let us drink and be mem” spree, but no more of It!
