DIETRICH MOVIE TO OPEN HERE TODAY ‘‘Shanghai Express” with Clive Brook Starts a Nine Day Engagement at the Indiana Theater. MARLENE DIETRICH’S much-talked-of vehicle, “Shanghai Express,” opens today at the Indiana for an extended run of nine days. This film has been specially pre-released to the Indiana and will have its run here ahead of many of the other de luxe houses throughout the country. Seven well-known character actors and actresses supplement the work of Marlene Dietrich and Clive Brook in Josef Von Sternberg's latest directorial production, “Shanghai Express.” These artists are Anna May Wong, Warner Oland, Lawrence Grant, Gustav Von Seyffertitz, Emil Chautard, Eugene Pallette and Louise Glosser Hale.

Miss Dietrich’s characterization in “Shanghai Express” is that of Shanghai Lily, an adventuress, notorious throughout the Orient. Brook plays the part of a British officer one of her legion of admirers. Miss Wong, featured character actress in “Daugher of the Dragon," has the role of a Chinese courtesan; Oland appears as a Chinese war lord; Grant portrays an European clergyman; Seyflertitz has the part of a German adventurer; Chautard, a former director of silent pictures, is an officer cashiered from the French army; Pallette is a gambler and bookmaker, and Miss Hale, a veteran actress, represents a boarding house keeper in Shanghai. Jules Furthman wrote the screen play of “Shanghai Express,” which is an adaptation of an original story by Harry Hervey, novelist, playwright and globe trotter. It was filmed on an ambitious scale at Paramount’s Hollywood studios and at several locations in southern California. A supplementary program made up of comedy short reels and an organ program, “An American Fantasy,” arranged and offered by Lester Huff, will complete *the program. tt tt tt CHURCH PLAYERS TO GIVE A COMEDY Clell Rice, tenor, will have one of the leading roles in a repeat performance of the three-act musical comedy, “In Old Vienna," which will be given by members of the choir and young married people’s class of the Irvington Presbyterian church at 8:15 o’clock tonight in the social hall of the Carrollton Avenue Reformed church, East Forty-fourth street and Carrollton avenue. The comedy is under the direction of Mrs. James R. Loomis, and will be sponsored by the woman’s council of the Carrollton Avenue church. Mrs. Joseph S. Griggs, president of the council, is chairman of the general committee on arrangements. The play was presented to large audiences in two Irvington churches recently. Members of the cast are Miss Adelaide Wagner, Mrs. Roy Kreipke, Mrs. S. G. Copeland, Miss Nancy Jane Hall, Charles Schneider, Clell Rice, Virgil Phemister, Marshall D. Lupton, Fay L. Gullion, Park Newton, George Gable, Russell Hutchinson, Alfred Ferguson and Thad Richardson. Mrs. Seward Craig, solo dancer, and Mrs. Joe G. Curry, violinist, will also take part. Pupils of Miss Ernestine Ewing of the Stockman studio, who will take the parts of little fairy dancers are Georgena Bex, Betty Curtis, Winifred Freeman and Mary Elizabeth Karstadt. Mrs. Clell Rice is pianist and orchestra director. The ticket sale is in charge of Mrs. Griggs, Humboldt 1280. The proceeds will go to the current expense fund of the Carrollton Avenue church. tt tt tt Indianapolis theaters today offe : Count Berni Vici and girls at the Lyric; “The Camel Through the Needle’s Eye” at the Civic; “Mystery of Life” at English’s; “The Greeks Had a Word For Them” at the Palace; “Bottom of the World” at the Circle; ‘Murders in the Rue Morgue” at the Apollo; “The Other Wife” at Keith's; burlesque at the Mutual and Colonial. tt n tt Neighborhood theaters tonight ofer: “Pagan Lady” at the Mecca; Under Eighteen’ ’at the Rivoli; Secret Service” at the Emmerson; Vlati Hari” at the Tuxedo, Tacoma THE TIMES Want Ad Headquarters Transient Rates Minimum spaced want ad accepted if wo Unes „ .
