UTILITY RATES IN MICHIGAN TO GET BIG SLASH State Board Threatens to Force Reductions Unless Cuts Are Voluntary. By United Pre LANSING, Mich., Feb. 12.—Substantial reductions in electric, gas and telephone rates in many sections of the state are in prospect iithin the next lew weeks, members of the Michigan public utilities commission revealed today. Rate reductions which will affect nearly one-half of the state may be proposed within two weeks, the commissioners said, but they declined to name the concern or its territory. Utility rates steadily have fallen for several months, although for the most part they have been confined to smaller telephone and gas concerns, Robert H. Dunn, chairn]ail the commission, and Com-

Free Thought By United Pre* WASHINGTON, Feb. 12. There is something frank about Tammany politicians which is disarming. One, who is a member of congress from New York, was asked: “What do you think about this business of A1 Smith saying he is willing to run for President?” “T don’t know yet,” said the congressman. “I haven’t heard. Go ask John F. Curry what I think. He’ll know.” Curry, of course, is leader of Tammany HalL
missioner Kit F. Clardy point out. More recently the Consumers Power Company asked the commission to approve general reductions in Its gas rates. Electrical companies for the last year have been adjusting their schedules, not on a state-wide basis, but section by section. Clardy said the time apparently has come when rate reductions can be made without endangering the financial structure of the utilities or impairing service. “Voluntary proposals for rate reductions have been received,” he said, “and more certainly will be made. “In addition to this, the commission intends to scan carefully annual reports which are being received to ascertain possibility of reductions by concerns which do not offer voluntarily to cut their schedules.”
