Aaron Stern Prototype of the motorman who spent his vacation in street car rides is Aaron Stern, 3637 North Illinois street, who has retired after forty years and seven month toting mail bags in Indianapolis. “I’ve been strolling a bit, just to keep in trim,’’ explained Stern, who left the postal service Monday. After walking steadily for forty years, a man just can’t quit in a day. “Golf? No, I don’t think 111 chase a ball over any one’s pasture,” he declared. Stern became familiar to hundreds, perhaps thousands of downtown office workers in the long years that he has delivered letters in the mile square area. “We shall miss your friendly face,” was the written tribute of C. A. Tevebaugh, state Y. M. C. A. secretary, and one of many sincere farewells to the veteran postman. Stern has no idea how many miles he has plodded, or how many letters, with who knows what of happiness, sorrow, surpise, and disappointment, he has carried in his long service. “This retiring isn’t so easy,” he said. “I miss working a lot. “While I was in the service I never took a full sick leave. We were allowed ten days a year, but I never needed it. I suppose I’d have fifty or sixty days coming to me. but I’d rather work than play sick.” HEADS FRENCH CIRCLE Richard Kautsky Named President of Technical Group. Richard Kautsky was elected

Effort of Chairman John W. McCardle of the public service commission to get a ruling from Attorney-General James M. Ogden, which would require municipal electric plants to pay for patrons’ motor changes when shift is made from direct to alternating current failed today. Ogden ruled that owners of the motors, and not the municipal plant, must pay for the change. SIX LOBSTERS STOLEN Fish Company Truck Is Looted While Parked Downtown. Six lobsters stepped out today with the aid of a thief. Police were informed by the Willis Fish Company, 238 Massachusetts avenue, that the lobsters were stolen from a company truck parked at Pearl and Meridian streets. They are valued at $5.
THEY TELL ME
BY BEN STERN TERRE HAUTE. Feb. s.—“ Hoist By His Own Petard,” or, “Out on the End cf a Limb” should be the title of this four-act play, the third act of which was performed at the Hotel Deming here Thursday night. The leading man and juvenile (in politics) is Mayor Wood Posey of Terre Haute; the ingenue is Miss Democratic Governorship; and the third character (villain or comedian?) is Richard (Little Dick) Werneke, Terre Haute boss. The first act occurred several months ago, when Dick conceived the idea of a “favorite son” candidate for the Democratic nomination for Governor. He suggested to his bosom pal and close political associate, Mayor Posey, that the latter permit his name to be used. an n The second act occurred at the Democratic editorial meeting at Gary last summer, when Werneke definitely offered his friend as a contender. The third act was played Thursday night, when Posey, convinced that he has an excellent chance to defeat Paul McNutt, fed to repletion several thousand Sixth district and state Democrats with chicken and oratory. Ik a long address Posey formally
MAJOR PARTIES STUDY ROSTERS FOR KEYNOTERS Seek Glib-Tongued Orators to Launch Campaigns This Summer. By Scripps-H award Newspaper Alliance WASHINGTON, Feb. 5. Two outstanding political jobs are awaiting two outstanding men. One is a Democratic appointment, the 1 other Republican. No pay is at- ; tached, but there is plenty of honor i and prestige and the certainty of crashing the front pages of every daily newspaper ia the United States. The jobs are those of temporary chairmen of the forthcoming Republican and Democratic national conventions, and the arrangements committees for each now are seeking the men. The temporary chairman sounds the keynote for his party as it starts its battle for the presidency and congress. His speech furnishes the text for the campaign. He should be an orator of undisputed ability, a phrase-maker, an inspiring talker. Large Democratic Field The Democrats this year want a man whose words will help lead them to victory next November. The Republicans want somebody who will persuade the country that there has been no depression; and that under Hoover the United States will go forward bigger and better than ever. There are many aspirants in both parties for the assignments. The Democrats have a large field to pick from, including Senate Minority Leader Robinson of Arkansas, Senators Buckley of Ohio, Walsh of Massachusetts, Harrison of Mississippi, Wagner of New York, Speaker Garner of Texas, Governor White of Ohio, former Governors Byrd of Virginia and Cox of Ohio, Joseph P. Tumulty, former secretary to Woodrow Wilson, and Representatives Crisp of Georgia and Rainey of Illinois. Were it not for the fact that he is gathering such rapid momentum as a ‘‘dark horse” candidate for President, the impression prevails that Speaker Gamer would be designated without hesitation. Coolidge Suggested Among Republicans, Senator Borah would be an outstanding keynoter, but to their sorrow he is off the regular reservation. This is true, also, of Senator Johnson of California. Republican senators under consideration include Majority Leader Watson of Indiana, who would appreciate the honor because it will help him in his candidacy for re-election; Reed of Pennsylvania, one of the administration’s most effective spokesmen; McNary of Oregon, Moses of New Hampshire and Vandenberg of Michigan. War Secretary Hurley also is under consideration. Even though he does not qualify as an orator, some Republicans are thinking of former President Coolidge, because of the advertising value. Senator Fess of Ohio, now chairman of the G. O. P. national committee, was temporary chairman four years ago. Claude G. Bowers, newspaperman and author, was the Democratic keynoter at Houston in 1928.
BYRON P. HOLLETT BURIED AT ARCADIA
Father of City Attorney Operated Coach Line From Terre Haute. Burial today at Arcadia, Ind., of Byron P. Hollett, 78, father of John E. Hollett, Indianapolis attorney, will mark the end of a chapter in early Indiana history, when the elder Hollett owned and operated a stage coach line between Terre Haute and the state capital. Mr, Hollett, later operator of a flour mill, a general merchandise store and a brick factory at Arcadia, died Thursday after a short illness. He was prominent in Hendricks county Democratic activities and was a Mason. Funeral services and burial were to be at the Arcadia church this afternoon. More than sixty years ago Mr. Hollett and a brother, Woodard, now deceased, operated the stage line on the National road. He was known to hundreds of pioneer travelers. He is survived by the son John, here. His wife, daughter of John H. Devaney of Indianapolis, died fifteen years ago. Last rites will be in charge of
announced he was a candidate, and of the long list of speakers only two indorsed him. They were State Senator Ira Clouser of Crawfordsville and Miss Emma May of Terre Haute, candidate for reporter of the supreme and appellate courts. To the consternation of all, John McFaddin of Rockville, veteran Democratic leader, the keynoter, spoke for almost an hour and mentioned Posey’s name only at the end, when he commended the mayor’s record in office. McFaddin couldn’t indorse Posey. because he is for McNutt, it was said. a a a But sitting beside Posey, glum of face and with none of the ebullient spirits of yore, was “Little Dick,” wily and astute politician. Little Dick knows that Posey, at the best, has a 100-to-l chance and that his name first was mentioned for dickering purposes. But to his consternation Posey takes it seriously. Therefore, Dick, if he intends to keep his reputation as a man of his word and retain his high rank in the local organization, must forego his usual custom of hopping on the winning bandwagon at the last minute and stick to Posey until the end, whether it be bitter or sweet. He can’t afford to hop off the reservation sow.

RADIO ADVERTISING BILL IS INTRODUCED Representative Would Put Ban on Long Commercial Statements. By Scripps-Howard Newspaper Alliance WASHINGTON, Feb. 5.—A bill aimed at commercial advertising over the radio has been laid before congress by Representative Thomas R. Amlie (Rep., Wis.). The bill would provide that no commercial announcements be broadcast on Sunday except short statements as to who is sponsoring programs. These statements might not be made oftener than once an hour. “The listening public has a right to some voice in the type of program that is hurled into its homes,” said Amlie today. “Os the total operating cost of radio, 90 per cent is paid by owners of receiving sets and only 10 per cent by broadcasting equipment.” DOMINANCE OF WHITES SEEN PERILED BY WAR I. U. Professor Says New Conflict Would Have Dire Result, If the white races again meet in a great war, it probably will mean the end of dominance of the white race, Professor Fred V. Chew of the Indiana university school of commerce and finance asserted in addressing members of the Indianapolis Real Estate Board in the Washington Thursday. Professor Chew recommends a change in eligibility requirements in the federal reserve rediscount system for, he says, present requirements are “too secure.” "With the prosperity of a community linked with the prosperity of its banks, people must have more confidence in the banking structure,” said Professor Chew. The court attacked the act of the 1925 legislature, declaring it provided means for defense against collection of judgment, but did not provide for receipt of notice that the assessment was to be made. Ryan’s ruling was made in the court fight of Roy Thurman, 204 West Maple road, to prevent the Saginaw City Loan and Investment Company from collecting a $1,378.79 judgment against him. The company had levied a garnishee on his wages without his knowledge, it was charged. JANITOR SCHOOL URGED House Smoke Board Proposes Instruction for Custodians. A school for janitors and custodians of apartment houses was proposed Thursday at a luncheon of the apartment house smoke board in the Chamber of Commerce building. Plans for the school were started after J. P. Brown, apartment house smoke inspector, and William P. Members of the committee appointed to take charge of the school are Frank Moynahan, Homer Rupard and Snethen and Johnson. ECONOMY BILL OFFERED Ludlow Says Measure Would Save An Annual Printing Cost. By Scripps-Howard Newspaper Alliance WASHINGTON, Feb. s.—Representative Louis Ludlow of Indianapolis introduced a bill in congress today which he says would insure a saving of $200,000 a year in the cost of public printing. Under the present procedure, public documents are divided equally among all members of the house and senate. Ludlow’s bill would allow each representative a credit of $2,200 a year, and each senator a credit of $3,000 a year with the government printing office, and permit the individual representatives and senators to withdraw printed matter of their own choosing up to the limit of their respective credits.
FIGHTS VEHLING VENUE CHANGE * Wilson Files Brief, Opposing Impeachment Plea. Fight to prevent a change of 1 venue in the impeachment case of ; Coroner Fred W. Vehling was started today by Prosecutor Herbert E. Wilson. Wilson filed a brief in circuit ; court setting forth that the defendant has no legal right to have the case tried in another county. Vehling’s attorneys are contending for a change of venue on basis that the coroner would not receive a fair and impartial trial in this county. Special Judge Fred C. Gause has ruled that Vehling must face trial here on the criminal charge of bribe solicitation. This trial starts Tuesday at 9:30 in criminal court. In the impeachment action, the brief said, “the defendant’s sole right to a change of venue is limited to a change of venue from the judge in case the defendant believes the presiding judge to be biased or prejudiced in the matter.” THE TIMES Want Ad Headquarters Transient Rates Minimum spaced want ad accepted if two lines.
