Shea and Jaffee Cop Opening Skate Event Heavy Snowfall May Handicap Distance Skaters in Today’s Two Events; American Hockey Team Bows to Canada in Initial Test. JACK RHEA REPEATS By United Prr* LAKE PLACID, N. Y., Feb. s.—Jack Shea of the United States won the 1,500-mctcr speed skating championship of the winter Olympic games today. It was his second championship of the meet. Alexander Hurd of Canada was second, and William Logan, Canada, third. The final Involved only United States and Canadian skaters, three from each country qualifying. BY HENRY M’LEMORE United Pres* Staff Correspondent LAKE PLACID. N. Y., Feb. s.—lt’s a long lane that has no turning, so the officials of the third winter Olympic games—the same officials who a few days ago were bemoaning the lack of winter weather—today were looking toward the heavens and wondering when it would stop snowing.
Big awkward machines, known as power sweepers, resembling steam rollers with a week's growth of beard on the roller part, moved slowly around the stadium track today, removing snow in preparation for the 1,500 and 10,000-meter races. Snow, however, was not the only topic of discussion in this little mountain village today. There was plenty and plent r of talk about America’s surprising showing Thursday in winning both the 500 and 5,000-meter runs. Jack Shea’s victory in the 500meter was surprising, but nothing compared to the surprise occasioned by Irving Jaffee’s triumph over the Norwegian stars, Ivar Ballangrud

and Bemt Evensen in the longer race. But Jaffee, the boy who built up his muscles as a runner for the New York curb exchange, accomplished the feat. So today America had displaced the men from the land of the midnight sun as favorites. Under the official scoring system, which awards ten points for a first place, five for a second, four for a third, and so on down the scale, America was ahead Thursday with 29 points. Canada was second with 13, and the Norwegians had 9. Only one final was scheduled for today—the 1,500-meter event. The qualifiers in the 10,000-meter jaunt will be picked today, but the final will not be run until Saturday. America’s hockey team, which lost a thrill-laden overtime game to the Canadian six Thursday, will meet Poland today. Poland lost a 2 to 1 decision to Germany on the opening day.

Gar Wood Sets Mark Veteran Speed Boat Pilot Travels 111 Miles an Hour. By United Prnn MIAMI BEACH, Fla.. Feb. 5. Gar Wood, driving the speedboat Miss America IX, set anew world’s record today. The veteran Detroit speed boat pilot negotiated the Indian Creek course at an average speed of 111.712 miles per hour on two runs in opposite directions. His speed bettered by more than a mile an hour the record of 110.223 miles per hour set by Kaye Don of England in Italy last year. Wood had set anew American record of 110.78 miles per hour here a few days ago, but the mark was not recognized as a world record because it did not surpass by a sufficient margin Don’s record. Wood’s first run today, southbound, was at the fastest speed he has ever attained —112.434 mihs per hour. On his second run, northbound, Wood traveled at the rate of 110.989 miles per hour. Weather conditions were ideal.
