POSEY OUT FOR GOVERNOR; HITS BONE DRY LAW Wright Act Repeal Plank Is . in Platform of Terre Haute Mayor. BY BEN STERN TERRE HAUTE, Feb. s.—Prohibition became an open Issue in the Indiana political picture today with pronouncement in favor of repeal of the Wright bone dry law contained in the platform of Mayor Wood Posey, who Thursday night anounced for the Democratic nomination for Governor. More than 3,000 Sixth district and southern Indiana Democrats gathered at the dinner at the Hotel Doming to listen to the first announcement by any Democrat for the Governorship, hear him indorsed by two speakers and to discuss local politics. Cheers from his loyal Terre Haute fellow townsmen greeted Posey's declaration: Favors Outright Repeal “I favor repeal of the Wright bone dry law and the substitution of a law that will enable our citizens to purchase whisky legally for scientific, medicinal and sacramental purposes on the advise and a ■written prescription from a reputable physician. “This not only will reduce the illegal sale and consumption of hard liquor, but wdll bring about more respectful attention to an observance of the national prohibition law,” Other Blanks Listed Posey’s platform also contains planks calling for more sound business management in government, elimination of extravagance and waste, appointment of highly qualified and competent public service commissioners, reform of the tax laws to equalize the burden, and Ihc letting of contracts for public orks “of any kind and description where needed, In any part of the state as soon as possible,” to alleviate unemployment. Absence of both R. Earl Peters, state chairman, and Thomas D. Taggart, national committeemen was regarded with surprise by Posey’s friends, who declared the pair had been invited. Caution was observed by the outside speakers in their reference to the Posey candidacy and John S. MoFaddin of Rockville, the keynoter declared at the end of a long speech: Competency Is Praised “Mayor Posey is competent to fill any office and I ask the Democrats from the Sixth district to give him the consideration to which his candidacy is entitled.” Others introduced by Samuel Royse, chairman of the Posey for Governor committee were: Charles Crawford, Terre Haute city attorney: Mrs. Virginia Jenckes of Terre Haute, Walter Myers, speaker of the Indiana house and candidate for the Democratic nomination for United States senator; Miss Emma May of Terre Haute, candidate for the nomination for reporter of the supreme court, and State Senator Ira Clouser of Crawfordsville.
