Tightening their belts, the Indiana Republican leaders are preparing to wage a determined campaign to improve the morale of party workers in Indiana. Punch drunk from the results of the municipal elections of 1929, and the congressional and state elections of 1930, plainly there has been evidenced a general let-down in that party. But Ivan Morgan, new state chairman, is endeavoring to overcome this through personal invitations and letters, urging Republicans to make suggestions for planks in the party platform. Everywhere is heard “harmony talk” and discussions of a “harmony ticket.” Reports so far are that M. Bert Thurman, national committeeman, is still the leading contender for the nomination for Governor. Although The Times poll showed Frederick Landis leading among the delegates, with the committeeman second, yet all indications are that the Logansport editor will stay out of the battle this year and conserve his energies for a campaign against Senator Arthur Robinson for that nomination in 1934. unit Landis is by far the most formidable antagonist that Thurman could have. There are reports that the veteran committeeman should be given the nomination for Governor without much opposition to effect harmony and to fulfill the obligation which the G. O. P. is said to owe him. Coupled with Thurman’s name is that of Frederick Schortemeier as the running mate in the Lieutenant Governor’s berth. Friends are insisting that Fred make a definite bid for this nomination. They point out that the former secretary of state and 1928 primary leader for the nomination thus will do much to smooth down internecine differences and prove a decided asset to the ticket. n tt Thurman is not of the orator type and conditions at this time require a vigorous speaking campaign, in which every backwoods county in the state shall be invaded. Schortemeier is an experienced campaigner, and, it is said, would like to take to the stump. If Fred can be induced to make the race for second place, another possible source of opposition to Thurman will be removed. And the cardinal point of political behavior is that “if you can’t defeat your enemies, win them to your standards.” That evidently is included in Thurman’s lexicon.
