TEACHER DENIES INSULT TO U. S. IN CLUB SPEECH ‘No Desire to Propagate Militarism,’ Declares Japanese Teacher. “I have no intention whatever to propagate Japanese militarism, or to underestimate the national policies of the United States,” said Professor Toyozo W. Nakarai of the Butler university college of religion today. This was his reply to criticisms of a speech he delivered Monday before the Sclentech Club. The Butler professor, a Japanese, aroused protests by ex-service men’s organizations because he was asserted to have likened Japan’s conquest of Manchuria to past occupation by United States troops of Cuba, Mexico and the Philippines. “I have been brought up by

Christians,'* declared Dr. Nakarai, “and I have lived in America now ! foi nearly ten years. My life is devoted to the education of American youth. “My position toward Japan will be shown by the fact that my life has been threatened because of my antiJapanese statements. ’ Pointing out that he is a student ; of religion, and not eager to speak | on politics, Nakarai stated that, upon insistent requests, he spoke on Manchuria, purely from the spirit of I public service. The comparison of United States and Japanese policies was not in : his address to the Scientech Club, according to Nakarai, but was a question raised by the audience i after his speech. When the question was raised,” jhe said. I plainly declared that ; being a mere ‘visitor’ in the states, I, with much appreciation, respect ! the government and public sentiment. “The ideals of the institution, at which I am privileged to serve, are entirely foreign to such a ‘propaganda.’ And if I were to be blamed for any reason, I hope that the responsibility will be placed upon me, and not on the institution.” London busses travel about 186,000,000 miles a year.

A. C. Sallee, park superintendent, to the park board. “There never will be a time when this boulevard can be constructed as cheaply as now,” he said. “In addition, the work would help to relieve the local unemployment situation.” Sallee also recommended construction or acquisition of a centrally located building to house the department’s mechanical forces, for economy and convenience. A third proposal was to provide an adequate water supply for the Riverside park district, . including three 18-hole golf courses, by establishing a ten-acre lake in Riverside park north of Thirtieth street, fed by Crooked creek, and by pumping water from White river south of Thirtieth street. The report points out that since

March 1, 1930, the board has abolished eighteen major positions and a number of minor jobs resulting in a savings of $20,190 in salaries alone. Sallee pointed out that the five golf courses in use last summer showed a net profit of $18,136. Completion of Pleasant Run boulevard from Washington street to English avenue, using “made work” labor, was one of the major projects of the year. Os $60,000 appropriated by the

city council for this work, only $29,468 was used, Salle reported. The remainder will be reappropriated to complete the boulevard from English avenue to Keystone avenue and Prospect street. At present, he reported, the department is finding employment for approximately 2,000 “made work” laborers each week. Frozen apples have been kept for four months without losing an appreciable amount of vitamin C.
