PHILIPPINE PLEA GIVEN CONGRESS Proposals on Immigration, Trade Are Presented. fly Lnllnl I’rrn* WASHINGTON. Jan. 29.—' The Philipp.ne legislative mission, seeking a "showdown” in congress on the long-debated question of independence, today offered proposals on immigration and trade relations to the house insular affairs committee. Speaker Manuel Roxas of the Philippine house of representatives, submitted amendments to the Hare independence bill, now pending, embracing the following points: 1. Independence following a fiveyear period in which anew government would be organized; without an independent plebiscite. 2. Immigration treatment for the Philippines similar to that accorded to countries in the western hemisphere, but with acceptance of a nominal quota of 100 annually—the restriction not to apply to Hawaii. 3. Limitation of duty-free imports on a quantitative basis, with full duties applicable after independence is effective. Refined sugar imports would be restricted to 30,000 tons annually. NOTED ORCHESTRA NOW ON THE ROOF A three-day engagement of Gene Austin and his Victor Recording orchestra is announced by the management of the Indiana Roof ballroom, starting tonight. Austin will be best remembered by local dancers as the Victor recorder who crooned nis way into their hearts with such numbers as ‘Ramona,” "My Blue Heaven,” ‘‘Forgive Me,” and “Melancholy Baby.” His only appearances in Indiana to date have been made on the stages of local theaters. The dance orchestra which Gene Austin brings to the Indiana Roof Friday evening is composed of men who furnished the musical background for most of his records. Included in the group will be two local boys who have made good in the musical world. They are Dub Shoffner and George Harper. Austin's dance programs during his three days’ stay on the Roof will include numbers which he made popular several years ago. as well as favorite new dance tunes.
Jack Tilson and his orchestra are now playing in the Roof ballroom, where they will remain as co-fea-tures with Austin's orchestra over the week-end. “GREEN PASTURES” DUE HERE MONDAY Mary Ella Hart, one of the group of dusky beauties constituting the revelers in the evil court of the king of Babylon, an absurd yet sensationally dramatic scene in “The Green Pastures,” which comes to English’s opera house for a stay of a week on Monday, Feb. 1, stepped from motion pictures to the spr-k----ing stage. She was one of the featured beauties with Pathe productions and her photograph is familiar to millions with no suspicion that the charmer is a colored girl. Asa matter of fact she is very fair, about the cast of an olive skinned brunette, which is true of the bevy of dancers, who appear as the king’s favorites in the revel in the Babylonian court, which, true to sacred history, terminates in poignant tragedy. Miss Hart is a native of Georgia,

Through the battle maneuvers at Panama, during the passage through the canal, and through varied other thrills, cameramen worked aboard the great ship, or from planes in the air. to transfer to the screen a mighty document of Uncle Sam’s activities in the air. Aside from the thrills, including hundreds of planer in sensational evolutions, diving two miles in less than thirty seconds, the landing of a giant Zeppelin on the deck of the carrier, and such details, runs a vivid romance . It tells the story of the struggle between old and new ideals in the navy, from the viewpoint of the enlisted man. It depicts a romance, which has actually something heroic to it, of a grizzled navy veteran and the keeper of a Panama resort. It has a sensational rescue, a dramatic sacrifice, ang untold intimate touches of life at with the eagles of the fleet. Wallace Beery and Clark Gable are co-starred in an elaborate cast in the huge production, which was directed by George Hill, famous for “The Big House.” u u Indianapolis theaters today offer; William Powell in “High Pressure” at the Apollo, ‘‘Tonight or Never” at the Palace, Pat Lane and Webb Company at the Lyric, “Men of Chance” with Mary Astor at the Circle, “Tomorrow and Tomorrow” with Ruth Chatterton at the Indiana, and burlesque at the Mutual. nun Neighborhood theaters tonight offer; “Lasa of the Rio Grande” at the Tacoma, “Girls About Town” at the Daisy, “Over the Hill” at the Hollywood, “Guilty Hands” at the Stratford, “Ambassador Bill” at the Talbott, “The Champ” at the Tuxedo, “East of Borneo” at the Irving, “Secret Service” at the Belmont, “Yellow Ticket” at the Orpheum, ‘Branded Men” at the Hamilton, “Surrender” at the Mecca. “Trader Horn” at the Roxy, “Age for Love” at the Terminal, and “Dancing Dynamite” at the Alamo. a a a Dr. John G.
