her uncle New Year's eve. He disappeared after the warrant was issued. Last week Mrs. Ilsley went to Washington and consulted a detective agency regarding a search for Crawford and protection for herself pending his arrest. Not many days later she was dead, brutally beaten to death in her bedroom. Bits of brown skin and negroid hair were found under her fingernails. Crawford was last reported seen in Washington, driving what appeared to be a car stolen from the Ilsley home at the time of the murder. Five Negroes are being held in Virginia as material witnesses. One is understood to be Crawford’s sweetheart, and all have admitted they know him. Fear of mob violence is believed behind the extreme secrecy police are maintaining. While they admit none of those under arrest is a principal in the case, nevertheless they refuse to divulge the names of any of them. Mrs. Ilsley’s funeral will be held today at Emmanuel Protestant Episcopal church, and the body will be sent to Milwaukee.
