WALKER JAILED BY SHEAFFER IN CONTEMPT CASE Bondsman Barred by Judge Secures Release of Prisoner. John 'Bull Mooset Walker, professional bondsman and politician, was a prisoner in county jail today on a charge of direct contempt of court, for which he was cited Monday afternoon by Municipal Judge William H. SheafTer. Tlie conviction, growing out of Walker's alleged violation of a court order prohibiting him from providing bonds, carried a jail sentence of ten days and fine of $25 and ccsts. Sheafler's ruling provided that Walker be released from jail on repayment to his client of a $75 fee. Maintains Innocence Interviewed in jail today, Walker declared, “I am clean of the whole thing. Other than that I have nothing to say.” He Indicated legal action will be taken by Taylor Groninger, attorney, whom he retained as counsel. Walker was scored by SheafTer for obtaining the release of a man who, Sheaffer said, was being held for observation because of mental derangement. The bond was $3,000 and was provided Saturday by Walker. Monday morning SheafTer ordered Walker to bring the bonded man into court. Walker and the man appeared nearly an hour late, and both were ordered to sit in ihe prisoner's box while another case was being tried. Bond Was Unsigned •Judge SheafTer read Ihe contempt charge, and Walker entered a plea of not guilty. SheafTer explained details of the charge, and Walker replied that he | had signed the bond on permission ol the sheriff. The bond was produced and SheafTer discovered the surety paper . was not signed. Walker declared it j was an oversight. Walker and several other police station bondsmen were barred by j SheafTer from operating in municipal court two weeks ago. FIRE DAMAGES HOMES One House Burned, Two Others Are Saved; Loss Totals 53,500. Three fires in the city Monday afternoon and night were responsible for total damages of $3,500 to property and furniture, fire officials said today. Sparks from a burning flue destroyed the hor.it of O. H. Button, at Fifty-sixth street and state Road 52, with $3,000 loss. Damage of $250 was caused by a fire of unknown origin at a vacant house at 128 North Dalaware street. Incendiary fire caused loss of SIOO at a vacant house at 633 East New York street. Nab Hotel Man in Gaming Raid Fred Heier. operator of a hotel at 12 South New Jersey street, faces trial today on charges of keeping a gaming house and operating a lottery, following a raid on his office Monday afternoon by police squads. TANGO DANGERS TO WIN PRIZES Last Lesson Tonight for Times-lndiana Contest. Final lessons in the tango will be given at the Indiana roof ballroom from 8:30 to 9.30 in preparation for the contest, to take place there on Wednesday night. Jac Broderick is in charge of the free classes in the tango, to which admittance may be gained on presentation of a clipping of this story to the doerman at the Indiana roof. Cash prizes of sls, $lO and *5 arc offered by the Indiana theater, in conjunction with The Times, as awards to the couples winning first, second and third places, respectively. Prizes will be presented the winners on Thursday night at the second stage show in the Indiana theater. Lucinda and Ricardo, specialists in the art of dancing the tango, will join with representatives of The Times to judge the contest. In addition, Lucinda and Ricardo will dance an exhibition number in the ballroom on Wednesday night. ; They will be accompanied by the ; entire Spanish ensemble in costume j exactly as they appear on the stage j at the Indiana theater this week in I the Fanchon and Marco presenta-! tion entitled “La Plaza.” When the winning couples are in- I troduced to the audience in the Indiana theater on Thursday evening, immediately preceding the awarding of the prize money, the couple chosen as the best dancers of ‘ the tango will be invited to give an exhibition on the theater’s stage. 1
