wily and astute boss of the the state township trustees’ organization, Tom McConnell, whose principal distinguishing mark is a large-bowled pipe which, rumor hath, is stuck in his mouth even while he is asleep, is getting ready to make sure that his hold is not broken on the district chairmanship up in northwestern Indiana. Tom is chairipan of the old Tenth district, but the last legislature played a dirty trick on him when it gerrymandered his domain. Two of the old standby counties, Lake and Warren, were taken away and the new setup provides for six counties from the old Tenth and seven recruited from the old Eleventh and Thirteenth districts. First step in Tom's campaign to be elected chairman of the new Second district is a rally at the Fowler hotel in Lafayette on Jan. 19. a a a Although the meeting proner with Frederick Van Nuys, Indianapolis attorney and former state chairman, as the principal speaker, is scheduled to begin at 8 p. m., county chairmen and vice-chairmen are asked to meet with McConnell at 7 p. m. for the ostensible purpose of miking over district business, it will give the district chief a chance to meet the county chairmen. There have been many reports that Hugh McMann of Rochester, Fulton county auditor, will challenge McConnell for chairmanship of the new Second. It is understood generally that McMann will be given the full support of the Mayr forces and the weight of the automobile license bureau patronage will be thrown in the balance. "The trouble with this is that Mayr and his pals don’t seem to weigh enough," McConnell's friends here say. ana Os course there isn't anv use in disguising the fact that the mayr forces are opopsed to McConnell, because he is a leader in the Paul, McNutt forces; and to halt the latter they have to stop the former. Only by getting rid of the chairmen favorable to the law' school dean can the delegations be held against McNutt. There was some talk that Delph McKesson of Plymouth, Democratic house leader, might pit his strength against McConnell, but he has given no indication of this. It's not cut and dried for Tom. however, and with the new lineup in the district he will have to do more glad-handing and baby kissing than a young law'yer trying to be nominated for congress. BANDIT ATTACKS MAN Slugs Mordeoal Albnher on Head With Brick, and Flees. Struck on the head with a brick by a bandit who attempted to rob him in a garage in the rear of his home Monday night, Mordecal Alboher, 1022 South Capitol avenue, was recovering today from a severe wound. The bandit, about 18. commanded Alboher to give him money. When Alboher answered that he had none, he was struck. The bandit escaped. Two thieves escaped under fire Monday night when Isaac Yancy, nightwatchman at the Arnold Coal Company, Twenty-fifth street and the canal, shot twice as the prowlers fled into the street.
