PLANS FIGHT TO REGAIN COUNTY ROAD PATROL Sheriff Sumner to Appear Before Council With Funds Demand. Fißht to pain reinstatement of sixteen deputy sheriffs, comprising the county road patrol, will be waged before county councilmen •Tan, 20 by Sheriff Charles <Buck) Sumner. Sumner, who lost his patrol Jan. 1. after the council sliced the appropriation from his office budget, said today he will seek a special allotment of $27,043 to meet patrol expenses. His petition will not. include the appointment of a road patrol chief, a post which, it is known, has caused altercation among county political bosses. Abolition Protested County residents and organization protested abolition of the patrol in November, and since then complaints have been made because persons outside the city limits are not protected from crime. Councilmen were non-committaL today when informed of Sumner's proposal. Several refused to dis 1 - russ the matter and Sam Pfendler declared he w'ould “express his attitude when the matter comes before the council.” “Probably Will Stay” Pfendler stated that .since the patrol had been abolished, “it probably will stay that way." Herman Rikhoff, former police, chief, held the post of road patrol head, which will not be restaWished should Sumner win his battle for reinstatement of the rural deputies. Automobiles, radios and weapons used by the former patrol probably will be disposed of by county commissioners, if the rouncil refuses Sumner's request.

Jan. 7.—A Japanese prowler in the home of an American 1 army officer was seriously wounded today in the latest of a series of incidents which have caused a tense situation here. Lieutenant Demas T. Craw of the army air corps was advised by his wife that someone had entered their home. Craw discovered Masato Hayashi, 19, and ordered him to throw up his hands. The Japanese ran. When he did not heed Craw's command to halt, the officer fired and wound the prowler in the lung.
